Hi all, I have been reading up about these problems, and they seem to be fairly common, but was curious if anyone had had an old Range Rover covered under warranty still,it's an 03 plate 4.4 L322! Mine hasn't had the front prop recall as it's still a solid coupling on the diff side! so I would assume the front differential hasn't been done ither! There is clicking noise coming from the car at the front, but I wouldn't say it's loud, no clicking when going from reverse to drive or visaversa! But the drivers side drive shaft does have some play in it so that is a possibility! But just curious as to what experience anyone has had with these and are they a pig to replace? Thanks, Tom.

Hi
Same engine and year as mine
I contacted land rover and asked about any outstanding recalls (mainly about the diff)
They then called me back to book it in have it changed.
Approx £1200 in parts alone and at no cost to myself
Ive had the car since 2011 and think I got it change in 2013
had the same symptoms as you...loud cracking...if its not loud it will get that way
just give your local a call
good luck

if you do need to change the prop this is what you need http://www.paddockspares.com/parts-and-accessories/range-rover-l322/propshaft.html
plus you need the right prop to go with this part. best shaft price is from LVB Limited doncaster. tell them you need the prop shaft that goes with the small spline tube conection. this is the cheapest option. or you can get the full conversion kit so you end up with a uj joint. that is double the price. i just had to do this job. i rang range rover and they said its to late now for the recall. so i did the swap my self.

Swapping the Prop is simple enough.....but to do the diff recall work yourself is a most likely a big no-no as it needs to be done with special tools and the process is quite long....someone on here posted the official Land Rover Tech Bulletin about it and it melted my brain as it requires taking the front diff off, opening it up, replacing lots of stuff, put it all back together again etc....it is quite involved!

Do some research on rangerovers.net as there is a pretty good write up about the issue and what requires changing.....

There are some on here that have had luck by writing to Land Rover themselves about it.

Opps, accidently replied to myself!!!!!

the place that did my gear box said £540 to change the diff over to UJ joint conection. so i did the spline job my self took my half an hour.

Okay, thanks for all your reply's, will call my local this afternoon and will enquire about recalls! A little worried as I haven't had this car long and already had to do the torque converter and various other bits! I know these things are expensive but may soon be going back to a classic if it carry's on! Thanks guys!

If you buy a L322, a classic as a back up would be a good idea.
I only buy manual, this rules out all the range rovers after the classic unless you want a :mad:bmw:mad: one.
P38 with 300 tdi and manual would be ideal, searched for any as pre-production models etc, could not find anything.
L322 has no manual and though it looks good and no doubt drives nice, auto rules it out.

And what, pray, is wrong with the BMW engine?o_O

Well I'll see as it may be a drive shaft! Would be nice if it was! But I have found a v8 Manuel p38 but it's bloody high miles! So dunno really, if this L322 causes more problems will maby get one! If there is one still about! Anyways, thanks for reply, will keep updated!
