Hi all my front diff starts to sing when i accellerate over 30 mph and gets moreintense the faster i drive and i have he chance tomorrow to get a 24 spline front diff for 50 quid...

my questions are

What is the benifit of having a 24 spline diff?

Why is the one i have making that horrid noise?

Is 50 quid a fair price?

How much work is involved in changing them and will i have to change the pair of diffs to 24 spline?

any help on any question would be awsome. thanks guys

Oh and its a 93 3dr 200tdi:)

it's bearings and crown wheel and pinion distance/preload-if it sounds bad, get it sorted before it tries to kill you.

The noise is most likely bearings on the way out
a 24 spline diff will fit in the axle but the halfshafts will not fit cos they will be 10 spline, also the ratio of the diff might be different to the back, then you've got big problems
if I were you I'd just get a 10 spline diff,a lot less hassle

Yep you need a 10 spline

24 spline shafts are stronger, but if you don't know why you need them then you don't need them

I got water in my axles and it pitted the crown wheel, then they both started whining loudly at speed.

Yours could be bearings though. Quite technical to rebuild a diff into a carrier, when I fitted my lockers it took a fair amount of concentration, also my dial test indicator kit was 50 quid, the cost of a second hand 10 spline.

Obvious answer :)

I thought 10 spline diffs were stronger as they have bigger splines and weren't so likely to strip them? Probably wrong though.

24 spline spreads the pressure over more splines im guessing and should be more responsive as a result. but that is guess work!:)

nope, smaller splines = more surface area, so less likely to wear splines out. also, shafts are thicker i think.

100 uid for the axle sounds good

if the axle is 24 spline you might aswell take it defo, better axle.

hopefully you can keep the old axle, id love a spare one if youre up in manc one day btw :)

I've just googled it and stand corrected that the 24 spline ones are stronger although it does go on to say that the 24 spline CV's aren't great so perhaps thats where i had got confused:doh:

interesting news mate

i mean theres two sides to shaft strength. 10 splines shafts are thinner so twist quite a lot, they have more give. this might make it easier on the CVs.

the stronger 24 spline shafts probably break cvs more often.

the benefit is that with 24 splines you cabn easily upgrade to ashcroft CVs, cos then its easier to repair when you break a shaft than a CV. you want the shafts to break cos theyre cheap.

im doing ok with lockers on stock 10 spline kit, but tbh i try to take it easier and not hammer it.

good luck anyway lyndon, cheers
