I have just brought a used 2003 TD4 Freelander.

It has 135k on the clock but does have full LR history.

I took the top cover off as part of a service (where the injectors are) and all around the crank case filter assembly and into the area the injectors are is full of engine oil.

I decided to change the crankcase filter and as part of this noticed that the two rubber seals were rock hard so replaced these with the filter kit.

I have now cleaned the oil and run the engine and think that I may have cured the leak as I think the oil may have been coming through the hard seals on the crankcase filter housing, however does this mean the engine is badly breathing and is consequently knackered?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me (I have attached a photo to show the extent of the oil).

PCV is something frequently missed, or unaware of by even enthusiastic DIY service, until oil is spotted. It means the engine WAS badly breathing due to possibly the original filter, engine is fine. MO, semi synthetic is not good enough, fully synthetic is what I use. My PCV was done recently, and was not too bad.

Have you checked out the EGR, no doubt the same state possibly.
Oh and the pic, seen worse.
Oh, and welcome.
