Freelander Tailgate is shut and latch inoperative

Hi, I have Freelander 1 2004. Tailgate is shut and won't open. Rear window drops required amount when handle is operated but door latch does not release. I can hear one microswitch in handle click but nothing for second microswitch for latch. Rear window operates fully with interior switch but has no effect on latch. Tried the calibration of window but also no effect. So far I have failed to get into the CCU by the reported method with the rear fog lamp etc. Have now managed to prise open the tailgate interior rear panel. On latch solenoid there seems to be plastic cover with 2x torx screws. Does anybody know if removal of plastic cover give access to latch/solenoid and allow manual opening? I have found many threads on the subject but so far nobody has reported how to release latch if the solenoid is dead.
Getting desperate now. Hope you can help.

Had the same problem with one of mine. Door solenoid is sticking.
Give the rear door a sharp thump to left of the number plate. Where the locking mechanism is located, worked for me
