hi guys,a couple of weeks ago my turbo on my 2004 2.0 ltr diesel hse freelander gave up the ghost big time.
the mechanic who came to us said the turbo had blown and that the engine was not seized.
we have now fitted a replacement turbo and primed it using a syringe supplied,we have fitted a new oil filter and oil.
when we went to start the engine it turns over one maybe twice and then stops,this is as far as the engine turns.
we then manage to turn the engine manually using a socket and bar so the engine is not seized.
so we would be very gratefull for any advice.

Battery charged? Oil in the cylinders? I always crank a diesel over with the glow plugs removed after a turbo failure. Did you look at the intake turbine to see if there's any damage to it. The only place that broken pieces end up is in the induction system or engine!
Did the engine rev out when the turbo failed? The M47R has been known to break a crack if it revs out of control.
 
yes the turbine in the centre of the turbo was quite loose and broken,once I had stopped the engine,i decided to try a move the car a short distance so went to start it again,this is when it would only turn a little and no more.
so now new turbo is fitted it still will only turn a lttle and no more.
 
The only way to tell without pulling the engine to pieces is by removing the glow plugs and looking inside the combustion chamber with a small endoscope. These are available cheap on Ebay these days. I have one that is only 8mm across, which is perfect for this kind of diagnostic work.
 
hi again and good morning.i have been told there is a low oil pressure sensor fitted on this engine which when there is low oil pressure it wont allow the engine to turn hence stop any more damage,my question is that my freelander had been stood for around three weeks with next to no oil in the engine,i then changed the turbo and oil etc but seeing as the engine is cold and been stood could the fact that no oil has been pumped around make the sensor still think there is low oil pressure and in turn wont allow the engine to turn?this morning I have again been able to turn the engine manually using a socket etc and the engine does turn when I do this.just thought if the low oil pressure sensor might be the problem now.

There's no low oil pressure start inhibitors on the M47R or any other engine as far as I know. In fact they would stop an engine from starting as the engine has to rotate to pump oil in the first place.
If you are able to turn the engine over in the correct direction easily by hand for several rotations then that points to a duff battery or starter solenoid. The starter solenoid is known to fail, effectively limiting current to the starter.
 
hi,we pushed my truck forward around 30 feet on a slight uphill,we then put it in fourth and pushed it backwards,when we do this it turns more than usual then just wont turn,battery is good and starter + solenoid seem fine so we are now starting to think its a bit more serious than just the turbo alas.

It's very unwise to turn an engine backwards, ie in 4th pushing car backwards.
It's impossible to be sure without looking but a suspect some foreign object is in a combustion chamber, or the crank has failed.
