Freelander refueling keeps tripping at pump

Hi all. I'm new to this site, but what I've seen - and read, gives me hope that someone can give me good advice.
My 2006 Td4 (2ltr) takes ages to fill at any garage, where the pump keeps tripping as I start to fill-up. It takes ages to get the tank filled and I'm getting really p***d-off. And when it's raining I'm getting b****y wet too! Other cars arrive and fill-up in no time at all, while my Freelander is left standing with the hose/pump clicking away. I've tried adusting the angle of the hose, etc, pushed all the way in as well as almost out of the filler neck. Nothing seems to work. I initially thought it was something to do with the design, but I'm awfully suspicious it's something else. Help?

Can't help much myself as does sound like something else.
I used to own a 2004 Td4, when I filled up I used to push nozzle all the way on then pull it back out over one bump on the nozzle, then I knew it would fill up with trigger pulled all the way up.
Sorry I can't be of more help. No doubt others will be along soon with more help!

I've tried that, as well as many angles and depths. I've looked under the car and can only see the one hose from the filler neck to the tank. Does anyone know if there is a breather hose for the Td4?

I think I have it on notch 2 or three. It will be one of them that is right for your car. You just have to keep practising.

Thanks for that info, but I have to add I've tried all the wierd & wonderfull configurations, but so far none have worked. So what I did today was, I undid the two jubilee-clips holding the Filling-stub-hose to the tank. With no fuel pouring out I pushed a piece of plastic tubing into the tank. That seemed to dislodge a valve, because deisel immediately poured out. With the hose reconnected, & clips replaced (new ones) I'll run the car until the fuel level drops enough to remove the hose again for access to what could be a valve... without a flood to follow. Also, I've not been able to locate any kind of breather-hose from the filler-neck to the tank. My Haynes Manual says there should be one. Does anyone know if there is or not?

Might be just today nozzles being a hair trigger on the cut off. I just pull back enough and occasionally feather the handle to prevent the cut off. You don't necessarily need to have the nozzle fully in 3/4 will do as long as you attend the refuelling. Petrol on the other hand is the volatile fuel that need more protection in case of static discharge striking the venting vapours.

Strange, on my L Series diesel I just stick the nozzle in the filler, pull the trigger, lock it on then go round cleaning the windows whistling merrily to myself until I hear it click cos its full. Those dam Krauts obviously screwed up the simple things as well as a the engine :)

The Spanish answer does have merit, I must agree. I'm heading for the UK soon so will see what happens in France, Holland and good-old Blighty.
The neck or whatever may be to blame too, and will keep this thread posted with whatever I find - or not, as the case may be... .
Thanks to all who have responded because the replies mean lots when added up.

I had the same issue with my MGF, it was a complete pain to fill but it was a common issue with them. My silver TD4 was a bit worse than my current one so some cars are worse than others but so are some garages.

As I don't need to fix my L Series, I have a lot more spare time on my hands than those with German or petrol engines in their Freelanders. In that spare time I do a fair bit of stalking. Not hot women down the road or actresses, but Freelanders. In my stalking today I came across something I hadn't noticed before.

It would look as though there are different fillers for different regions/countries. Maybe different countries have different standards for pumps. If a car moved to another region, maybe it would have trouble with the pumps there - eg keep tripping.

Anyway, writing this has taken up to much of my time, I need to get back to stalking.......

None of the 5 Fl1s I've had have been difficult to fill. I just stuff the nozzle into the filler neck and pull the trigger.
The wife's Ford Kuga has one of those no cap filling systems. That I find very fussy. The trigger needs to be pulled gently to start. If I just pull it like I do with the Freelander, the nozzle shuts off. I'm not a fan of it at all. But my Freelander is just fine.

Some diesel pumps deliver very quickly, you just have to pull the nozzle back a little to let them breath. If you have ever stood filling a commercial vehicle tank with a slow pump you will know why they are generally a bit quicker than normal and you have to adjust to suit them.

Thanks for that info. It's a German registered car reregistered into Spain, so what you write can make a whole lot of sense. I'll check it out.
