Freelander Rear Hub Bearing Renewal

    Hi All,

    I have searched through the forum for advice on replacing the rear hub bearing on my 06 Freelander, but can't find anything so I'm asking for help??

    My 06 Freelander TD4, is making a strange noise from the back end like a droning noise and a slight bit of vibration but is only noticable at speeds of around 60 mph and also when slowing down when say coming up to a roundabout. I took it to a garage and had the two prop bearings changed on their advice but the noise and vibration is still there the only thing I can think off is the hub/wheel bearing is on the way out so I would like to change it. I'm pretty handy at DIY but have never done this type of repair myself before and am looking for a bit of advice from forum members on how to go about it. I know bearings can be a pain to remove and replace but I'm pretty confident I have the tools to do this.

    So any advice more than welcome.

    Just been to Bearmach, to purchase the wheel bearing and asked them if they could put their finger on my problem. They said that Freelanders are know for having a diff problem this is the first I have heared of this has anybody else heared of this diff problem???????

    yes I have a diff problem and as soon as I can I am changing it as I have a replacement I lead to believe that all the diffs are the same ( Stratstones told me) but the one I got it off was the same TD4 auto what usually happens is the bearing go on each side if you get under and try to move the drive shafts up and down mine is terrible I am going to replace the outer ends CVs as it would be silly not to and the inner ones are perfect the doner car had only done small milage as the engin sized so he scraped it but he cut the drivshafts to get the diff out easy and remember if you are going to diy then make sure the bolts holding your sub frame up are correctly tightend

    for got to say you will need a press to get the bearing get back in

    Make sure they go in the correct way - one side is magnetic for the abs!

    Yes thanks, I noticed the new one had a magnet on one side, i take it the magnet faces away from the wheel?? I should be able to see when the old one comes out hopefully!!!

    Hi Grayo,
    How many miles have you done? and have you checked the VCU? Noticed it tight/holding back when reversing?

    If your vcu is tight then it will put extra strain on your ird and diff...some users have seen saw toothing on the rear tyres which causes droning/vibration at certain speeds.

    Hi Joe,

    Thanks for the reply. The car has done 51,000 miles, I've not checked the VCU, and have not noticed it tight/holding back when reversing apart from sometimes a little whining noise from the back passenger side when turning a corner. I have just had the two prop bearings changed so I know it's not those thats causing the problem.

    I was just having a look on another forum and somebody on there seems to have had the same problem, he found out it was the tyres that were causing the problem. I had two front tyres changed last November, before I had Michelin's all round I now have a different make on the front I'm just wondering if this is the same problem as the guy on the other forum. I must say I didn't notice any noise before the tyre change????

    Hi.
    New tyres should ALWAYS go on the back if your only changing 2 of them. Also I have seen, twice now two different people thinking a wheel bearing Was on it's way out and it turned out to be a tyre that had worn unevenly, so check them first before you go to the trouble and expense of doing the bearings.

    Hi Andrew,

    Thanks for the reply. I'm going to change the wheels around tomorrow to see if that makes any difference. From what I have been reading on the forums it's all pointing towards the tyres, as said before I have already had the prop bearings changed so hopefully the wheel change will save me a few more pound.

    Deffo change tyres over as soon as you can chief.
    New tyres on the front will have a larger radius and upset the ratio of the drive to the rear..ALWAYS FIT NEW TYRES TO THE BACK. you will probably find your diff is getting very hot, and the wine going round corners is strain on your diff caused by the imbalance. Either swap tyres round or buy a new pair of the exact same make and size and stick them on the rear - hopefully you wont have cooked the diff, it might be an idea for you to drain the diff oil (or pump it out) and replace with new.

    Update on my wheel problem

    Changed the wheels around today and it's a 100% improvement, no more bearing gone sound and no vibration in the car when traveling at around 70mph on motorway............Sorted thanks for all your help and advice

    realy stupid question...sorry! but ive drive shaft removed to rear axle to get bearings replaced but never got around to puttin it back on.. but would new tyres on the front make a diff to me with only 2 wheel drive ?just i have that noise also and only noticed after tyres went on but though it was coincidence..

    if in only front wheel drive mode ( mondo mode ) then I dont think there will be a prob as there is no connection from the IRD to the VCU to the rear diff.Someone else maybe will put me right if I am talking cobblers

    I think you mean you have removed the prop shaft to the rear axle. In your case I don't know to be honest, in my case yes it made a hell of a difference I had two new tyres put on in November, and started hearing what sounded like a bearing gone and vibration throught out the car, I took the car to my local mechanic who said he thought one of the prop shaft bearings was on the way out but not sure which one so I asked him to change the two prop bearings £300 later the noise was still there. We were just about to start on the hub bearings when the advice from the forum was to change the wheels around which is what I did today which has stopped the noise and vibration I was getting and left me £300 worse off LOL:doh::doh::doh:

    ill try change around tyres the weekend out of curiosity ill let ye know.. tyres on front after going to mondo wore on outside on drivers side only even after tracking was done just wondering should i get the tracking settings changed from 4 to 2 wheel drive toe in/out? would it matter

    I don't think it matters if it's two or four wheel drive it should be the same. If your tyre is wearing on the outside I'd certainly get your tracking checked. Let us know how you get on with the wheel swap around.

    wheel swap kinda worked vibration went(front n/side imbalanced) but whine still there so popped up on lift and ran... whine coming from wheel bearing front o/side so changed bearing.. fixed!! finally now just to get rid of the three lights id not like to mention ,.

    Hi i have just purchased a 2004 td4 i have the same droning noise as you describe even sounds a lil worse when i go round a bend and put more load on the rears, did you change the bearings,tyres, inner bearings ?? how did you get on did you rectify it ??
    I have checked for play in the rear wheel doesnt seem to be any or very very little so not sure if its the bearing in the wheel hub or the bearings on the diff wondered if you fixed yours ??/
