hi, .

does anybody know where i can get hold of the infamous blanking plate for ird unit. the ebay link that comes up on net is no longer active. right now i cannot afford the grand ive been told it will cost for new ird, viscous coupling, drive shaft and rear transfer box.

any advice please, love the vehicle,in great condition but at the minute its sat in the garage ready to be scrapped.

thankyou

you may not need one.
depending on the damage to the ird, you can often get away with just removing the propshafts and vcu.
have you removed them and road tested?

thanks for the reply,

out in the peak district no indication of the problem till i left a layby heading downhill, 400 yards later the banging started, had to then drive a furter 300 yards until i found somewhere temporary to pull up. had a look couldnt see anything obvious, had to move it very slowly a further 400 yards to a car park (lucky).

its now at the garage where it was dropped off. garage is about a mile downhill from my house. was a tad upset when told a grand to fix it but when told of 2wd option was obviously somewhat happier.

so just remove shaft and vcu while leaving ends in ird and rear diff???
new to landys, any advice welcome.

cheers

Exactly that. It's worth trying, depending on the damage internally it may run happily and quietly in front wheel drive.
The blanking plate is only needed if the output pinion for the rear drive or it's bearings are knackered and need to be removed.

Good luck..

Hey Mel , I'm going thru the exact thing right now !
But heres what happening with me . If you can take the IRD out and get a gear box place that knows what he's doing !if you ask the chap to split the IRD and remove the drive train and inners and reassemble it the box should be able to be refitted in sittue and the coupling will be in place for the propshaft to be refitted ,there fore you will be in 2 wheel drive but the propshaft will still give you the rigidness onto the back axle . the IRD is refilled with ordinary oil to lubricate the 2 bits on the inside that are still connected to the inside of the casing (the front coupling and the the spindle that connects to the front shaft?) Mines is in being re-assembled today (Wed) I'll post the out come as soon as I get my car back. S Scotland

Hi there , heres the update totally dis regard what I said earlier about being told that its possible to remove the " Guts" from the IRD and refit so's the props in place cos I've just had a phone call to go down and see the Guy fixing my car ! It wont drive at all without the drive train on the inside of the IRD . F*CK F*CK!!!!
but on the plus side I managed to get back the Blanking plate I got off Ebay and I'm trying to contact the guy there for you for details on the Plates to put on the forum if its ok withhim . he's changed his Phone No and its somewhere around birmingham now . will keep trying and let you know.

Just thinking about Stevelanders idea of removing guts of IRD and using it..Can't see that working....

I was thinking if you wanted to be in 2WD but still have propshaft and VCU in place..

Could you not remove the rear pinion drive gear from the IRD as you do when install IRD Blanking Plate..As I have...
So now you have the Rear drive out,.Could the Gears/Cogs not be cut away,.so when replaced they don't make contact with the gears inside the IRD,.Acts like a Blanking Plate But leaves the Fitting to reinstall your prop..(still 2WD)
And might work for M.O.T purposes..

Is This making sense,.Cause i'm loosing faith in this idea as i type..:D

Its far simpler just to remove the two propshafts and unbolt the VCU. Its a half hour job. I ran for 6 months in 2wd and just left the IRD output flange / cup spinning.

I even got an MOT test conducted and received only an advisory for 'Propshaft missing'

In the end I refitted everything as the mpg figure was not that much better and I got fed up with the traction control kicking in when doing hill starts.

Steve

Hi, I took the shaft off and have left the flange spinning out of the back of the IRD box. These is a slight vibration for example if your road speed is a little slow in a higher gear. I was wondering if this could be caused by the "flange"(sorry don't know the technical term) not being completely balanced? therefore could it be worth removing and using the blanking plate? alternatively it could be that there is something wrong in the IRD therefore removing the shaft completely could be worthwhile?
Thanks in advance for your help,
Mark
