Welcome to Landyzone Michael
When I got my first 1.8 it started to develop vibrations from the rear when cornering. I thought it was rear diff bushes but it turned out to be the rear viscous coupling bush. Changed both and problem went away. Always something in the drive train though, you will get intimate with that part of your Landy.

Have you checked the IRD (the Freelander's equivalent of a transfer box)? Has it been driven with an odd mix of tyres, or have new tyres been put on the front? The Freelander is fussy on tyres, anything other than the same tyres all round, or new tyres on the front, even if the same, will trash the AWD system very quickly, normally resulting is stripped gears, which the cause bagging noises, as the teeth grind themselves to nothing.
