Well.. it wasnt battery, or starter motor, or earth connections...

after going through all the bits above I decided to take the started motor out..and what a muddy mess!!!
No hope for it, not even going to bother trying to clean it.. I've only put a new one in back in April or so...

Thing is, I dont have a clue how the mud is getting in, it's not through the starter motor as its clean around it..

its not very hard to clean up your old starter as you have already took it apart. going off the photos it looks like the brushes are either stook in or worn down.the main body, brushes and front bracket of starter can be cleaned with parafin as can the drive.the armature needs to be cleaned either using a lathe and emery paper and the solonoid will just need a wipe inside with some wd40 on a rag where the plunger fits.to reassemble just wipe dry and grease both bushes and a smear of grease on the plunger. total cost of repair will be for the paraffin, grease and a hour of your time.

I agree with that!
There are two possibilities:

1. You successfully restore the starter to good running order,

2. it doesn't fix, but you learn a lot about stripping starters.

The important point is that you have nothing to lose by trying.
Go for it!

Do you put the bolt into the bell housing breather hole before wading, if not I recon thats where its going in, if it is I would hate to see what your clutch looks like!

yep.. wading plugs are always in before going off roading.
and have extended breathers up to the snorkel for gearbox, transfer, axles, etc..

might give it a go at cleaning the starter.. it think its only dirty, can't be worn, its only a few months old, and I didnt use the land rover for 2 months...so started has been in for only 6 months or so..

Great plan!

Start with a set of goggles and an air-jet.

You'll save a heap of cash.

Make sure you get in as far as the big contacts in the solenoid. These must be reasonably clean too.
