my daughters frl has developed a loud noise like a clumping when driving forward its less noisy in reverse it sounds like a flat tyre and seems to coming from front nearside any ideas anyone :(

hi freebiker yes went from clicking noise to this thumping noise , i only got over to drive it this morning and its quite a loud noise now

Sounds like it could either be the CV joints (i know they click when they wear), or the wheel bearings (can knock/rumble when they wear).

The easiest way to check whether it's wheel bearings would be to jack up the wheel, and then try and see if there is any play in the wheel once it's in the air (move it side to side etc).

To check cv joints, get under the car where the driveshaft is, and try and move the driveshaft of said wheel up and down. There shouldn't be excessive movement in the driveshaft.

Welcome to the forum by the way!

thanks very much freebiker its a big worry when something happens like this , we bought this before christmas because i had to stop driving (health) and its easier for me to get in and out of , so its a pain in the butt now , being without it and i cant afford the rip of garages , is it a big job to do the cv joints , or drive shaft , and woiuld i be able to get them second hand or is that a no goer

If you're physically able and you don't mind getting your hands dirty then it's not too much of a hard job to do at all. If you get your hands on a haynes manual it'll have step by step instructions, or someone on here may have done a write-up of how they've done it before if you have a search.

I'd buy new if i were you, else you'll be looking at replacing the parts in no time again.

thats my prob now im no longer able to do anything pyhsical have to rely on others and its damned frustrating , i would normally have it stripped down and and then worry lol i will try and get a manual
many thanks , this is great site

Sorry to hear of your problems. If you bought just before Xmas did it come with any warranty? Private or trade purchase?

it was a private deal and my mate gave it a good going over , also its done a good few miles since we bought it , so i cant say the guy new if anything was dodgy with it
