I've been thinking about this. Some people:
  • Can't spell or make themselves coherent
  • Don't even have the good grace to say thank you
  • Haven't the faintest idea about netiquette
But I would say give new posters a fighting chance before flaming them, perhaps by drawing out their thinking with some well-placed questions.

I think we should give thems enough rope to hang themselves first though. I'm no angel whatsover, and this is not directed personally, but looking back on a few recent posters I have these thoughts and feelings:

And guys - when did overt swearing become acceptable? A few acronyms and st*ars are OK surely?

Please post your comments and views - I may get a flaming myself but I invite your comment, whatever form that may take.

As a relative newby myself I feel quite lucky in that I haven't been flamed, ignored on occasion yes. It seems trying to join in with some of the banter that occurs on this site wont wash with the more established members, and I can appreciate that. As for the swearing, I don't find it offensive but am surprised there is no swear filter. Are there any moderators on this site?
I think it's fair to say that most car forums are "cliquey", I visit a few and it's mostly the same, viewing from the "outside".

some people you can help and some are beyond help..if you get a stupid question then you can either ignore it or post a reply that will make them think abit ..or YOU could ask the questions that should have been clear in the original post. as for the swearing wtf is all that about?? we al know what f**k means so why not just type it?? a lot of things get answered but go unnoticed because it done via pm's. i know because i have help a few members this way. but if someone says can i fit these 355/10 x22 bear paw tyres on my steel series 2a rims then they should be publicly stoned and beaten about the soft body parts with a rear half shaft...
as for yer maun len drover..well.. he could be wheresdildo's twin

I strugle with spelling and make typos, however I do try hard and am not here for the spelling test, I did that at school and did not do very well. I am just looking for advice and help others where I can.

PS there are probably many errors in this text it's self.

Posts don't go "ignored", they go unanswered, I've had many posts go unanswered. But then I'm not paranoid. Most members help others to varieing degrees and I reckon all will help where possible. Would you prefer it if however many members there are replied with "Terribly sorry old boy but I don't know the answer to your query".

I don't think the forum is "cliquey", some members share more banter than others, some from what I can make out are mates, others have struck up frienships outside the forum. Good look to them it's none of my business, and I'm not paranoid.

Most of Widgets points about the way new larkers are treat in their threads is just banter, the roll cage one was simply digression, pub type bawdyness, and rather funny which is one of the better points of this forum, there are other forums that are full of uptight self important members which are downright boring and don't get half the "hits" as this one.

I don't care how well people can spell some can others can't. Unintelligable posts are unexcusable and there is also no excuse for typos, can't people read what they've written before they post it. If I haven't understood a post after the second or third reading then I give up.

Swearing became unacceptable with the Victorians until then it was an acceptable part of the English language.

Got to go Teabreak finished 10 minutes ago.

i agree with what was said about flaming, i think we should be really polite to everyone and this toilet houmour has to stop!!!!!
someday you, grunt, will be the butt of someone's joke. and we'll see how you like it. or maybe widget could vet all posts to see if we can have a pop at them or if we should behave.
i sugest a points system. 1 point for each spelling or punctuation error. 5 points for asking a dumb question with a 3 point rebate if it is within yer first 5 posts.100 points for each use of 'lol' ..and 5000 point for using deisel instead of diesel.
anyone with more than 8 points is open to flaming or general piff taking

now if you was eddjamacated like wot we is, you'd realise that grunt has a line from an obscure song as his signature. now i think its from an alex harvey song but i can't remember the title.

The Alex Harvey Band or The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Saw both several times. The Best thing to come out of Scotland except whiskey of course. Thought you'd get that one Slob. Your turn.

I thought the best thing to come outa Scotland was the skids, see them B4 they were famous at a pub called the Bungalow, opposite the lorry park in Paisley, i remember it well because i had the sh*ts all the way home after a curry, stopped at every service area between Hamilton and newport pagnell, and even once on the hard shoulder.
