hi all
Well after a few years of non troublesome motoring ,the p38 4.0l has decided to play up again .
Only this time it's a mechanical 'problem ' and not an electrical one ! .after shelling
Out for a full service inc iridium plugs as its lpg,I noticed it wasn't running as smooth as before,so put it in for a diag and it is running on 6 pots 4 and 6 down ,still starts and runs but if you try and push it ,it pinks like buggery ,leads coil pack etc all ok ( just my luck ) comp down on 4&6 ,SOO it looks like I have a problem !!!
My dilemma
Engine is 'new'? Duckworth exchange unit , replaced in 2010 ,but only have 10,000 miles on it (wkend shopping & barrelling down motorway visiting parents)
Have the car on drive and contemplating a strip down of offending head ,
With that low mileage 10 k what will I find ?
Best scenario a freaky bad gasket ? A slipped liner ? Or block breached?
Never overheated no oil in water so looks like it's a combustion issue not a jacket one ?
It has a prins lpg system worth more than the scrap value (£240)
But need it out of way ,as have had to get another car .
What would you do !!!
As would only be worth a grand max fixed ,
Cheers

Sounds to me like the gasket has gone between 4-6, i would fix it, wipe the heads of and take a peak, it worth fixing, its not what its worth its what the car is worth to you and as a nice comfy motor they are priceless, nothing else matches up to a RR.

That's my thoughts ,too good to scrap ,just my concern that after stripping head off and finding a slipped liner and not a simple (relatively ) head gasket ,and I presume it would be two slipped liners ?? .what is the fix for slipped liners ? I know that is the worst scenario, but it's better to be prepared for worst case ,
Is the job possible without removing lpg plenum connections ? And sliding plenum out of way ,enough to get to head ?
Cheers
John

Yes when it comes to concern about undoing things ,exhaust and head do come to mind ,my main concern is having enough tools to do job ,my main hobby was and is triumph spitfire, so most of my kit is imperial, but I think I can scavenge enough ,also if I don't get it off drive soon wife will ban nighttime nuptials
And if it turns out to be not worth repairing ,I have to give it away just to have it towed of drive ,whereas I can drive it to end of life centre (be like putting down your favourite pet ) drastic but solves all problems , it's just the fact the engine and torque converter have only done 10,000 ,
Heart is saying get rid of and get spitty out of garage and drive off the hurt, head is saying repair and sell let someone else enjoy ,or repair if possible and strip everything to sell and get carcass removed
Life is a series of painfull decisions
Cheers

Hear! Hear! Best by far.

What makes you think it might be slipped liners?
1) if the liner(s) are moving you will hear them.
2) liners on the move will not necessarily produce the symptoms you are experiencing.
nb: 10k seems a very low mileage for these troubles to occur, but if the worse happens the only practical cure for slipped liners is a replacement block, so think positive & start with the simpler causes ;)

Repair it. You obviously have a bad head gasket. Do both whilst your at it a few buy quality gasket. You will need a big breaker bar and 6 point socket on the head bolts. Long 12 point socket for the exhaust manifold bolts

Thanks all for replying,I know in my heart I want to fix it as it would be a shame to bin an engine with such low mileage ,it's my head that is avoiding the headache and missing knuckle skin ,Norseman I do try to think positive BUT I have owned the Range Rover for six years and understand how fickle they are !!
And when I said in previous post it pinks when pushed, I am not sure if it could be a rattle on that side ? So would slipped liners rattle all the time or just when warm ?something that might shed some light is ,when it starts up on petrol it does so fine in a couple of revolutions but it idles slightly lumpy not rough but a slight miss and you get a pinking / rattle when pushed around 2500 rpm + .but when it switches to lpg after 3/4 mile the pinking is still there but a lot quieter? Also if you get a feel for engine and back it off it goes so you end up in top gear but slower as you can't push it ,
I was looking at doing both heads as a complete gasket set seemed sensible any brand better than others ? And if I buy non stretch head arp bolts ,does this negate the need to retighten at a certain interval ? To save removing stuff again
Many thanks
John

Most of the engine is imperial! The car is a strange mix of whatever Land Rover had handy.

Get the heads off and then reassess. Did the replacement engine have a guarantee?

UV dye in the oil often shows on the dipstick with no sign of oil but depends where the gasket has blown.

Slipped liners do not rattle, they produce an audible metallic tap at piston speed (do not confuse with valve gear which is half that speed). The sound is normally inaudible when the engine is cold & becomes apparent as it warms up.
