Hi can anyone help me !!! i have a 300 tdi and am trying to fit front spot lights and have been told that there should be a spare relay to wire them up to so they work on full beam with headlights ,is this right and if so how do i identify the right one, thanks.

Hi.
I fitted spots to my old 110 but they were not road legal because they were to powerfull but heres how i wired them up....
There was no spare relay so i bought one, they aint dear,a few quid, this was fitted under the bonnet,i found a spare wire under the dash,a white one, these are 12v but low ampage, this went to a switch i fitted on the dash, from there the wire went to the relay.
The high ampage feed was direct from before the alternator (straight from battery)heavy gauge brown wire, about as thick as little finger,i spliced into this and connected a wire capable of high ampage, about as thick as a pencil, this went to to relay. The spots go to the relay. There a 4 terminals on a relay. When the switch is turned on this feeds low ampage to the relay which in turn opens to let the high ampage flow to the spots.I fitted a 25amp fuse on the feed to the spots.Sounds more complicated than it is.I hope this sheds some light on the subject.........ha ha.

There's no spare relay on mine (at least).

I've fitted an extra 8 way fuse box under the passenger seat taking a direct feed from the battery (actually through an FIA cut out switch but skip this complication). This fusebox is used to supply all my extras without messing with the original wiring too much (other than to pick up feeds like main beam) and which always helps reliability and any maintenance later.

If you're just planning on adding the spots then simplify right back to one wire from the battery with one 25A fuse to feed your new relay.

These are my diagrams for the 750w of forward facing lighting I have on NUSH:) Hope they're useful.

Gents,

Just to prove these historical threads still serve their purpose. So far all of the annoying little problems have found their solution on these threads. Thanks for the info, directions and diagrams I will put them to good use this weekend.

To save yourself a lot of work buy the standard lead from a main dealer.

The lead has a relay already inserted in it already, all you do is plug into the back of the bulb and the plug piggybacks onto this. You can use either headlight. The loom is made with the latest connectors on the ends as it was made for fitting genuine driving lamps on Discos and Range rovers.

No mucking about with wires or switches, loom about £30 from main dealers. Ask for wiring kit STC 8813 with plugs, or RTC 9586A which has bullet connectors fitted, not as straightforward.

I'm just going through the same thing now, I'm just trying to work out how to get the wires from the engine compartment to the cabin for the switch, am I being daft?
