fitting an extra battery

I want to stick another 12V in the boot and wire it up to run accessories when the car is stopped and to help the main battery (if needed) when starting. Can someone please tell me how to set this up? Telling me to go buy a clever split-charging circuit or something glib like that is NOT going to help. I'm gonna have to build it from scratch so if one you kind sirs can draw me a picture I'd be ever so grateful, really!
