Hiya I just got my hands on a sailsbury rear axle from a 130, and I want to fit it to my 90, easy enough although I believe it to have a 1 inch longer "nose" input flange is sticks forward 1 inch than a standard axle.

This means a 1 inch shorter propshaft??? has anyone done it?? or is it a call to reco prop? Dont fancy limiting my articulation or pushing my transfer box forward.

Sorry I cant help other than do you know the ratio of the Salisbury, you wouldn’t want to mix the ratio from front to back, it will give the centre diff a lot of work, off memory I think the standard are 3.54:1 but don’t know about the Salisbury (its quite easy to check though)
I think you might have to get your tape measure out!!

All the diffs on 90/110/130 as well as discos are 3.54:1 so no prob there. If there's not much difference in length can't it be accomodated by the sliding joint in the propshaft?

I think I would remove the sliding sleeve gator and measure the amount of splines showing (a standard fit) then measure what’s needed with your Salisbury fitted and get it modified if needed, as you are aware the sliding sleeve is essential.:)

Its easier than that i can just lay a diff on top of my removed axle see the differance from the pinion flange then get a propshaft cut down to the right length, that was the plan' although I wondered if anyone else had fitted one similar that actually knows the dimensions. I believe some mil 90s were fitted with salisburys and just wondered if the parts were available.

Hi, if that’s the case try asking Landrover there should be a part No, is it the same as a standard one?

silly question time whats the benefit of a salisbury axel?I think i got on me 110 as the diff i have is a bit angular

According to the 90/110/defender manual a 110 having a salisbury back axle as standard has a 500kg higher rear axle payload than a 90 with a rover axle.

To be honest they have advantages and disadvantages,

Advantages are,

24 spline 4 pin diff stronger than a landy 4 pin diff, heavy duty shafts slightly stronger than landy 24 spline shafts. Hopefully unbreakable ish.

Disadvantages are:

Bigger diff, bit harder to work on, lower ground clearance below rear diff to ground, heavy!

I got one for 20 quid on flebay, will overhaul it and get it ready to swap out, Im thinking I need to measure the differance in diff pinion flanges and then measeure the differance in propshaft length between an 88 rear and a 90 rear might by some luck be shorter and may work out alright, Jai
