Hi all

just picked up my first disco, Mk1, 300TDi, 1994

First question is the clutch, the action all seems to be in the last inch and is quite fierce, is that normal or not?

The series landies we had some years ago were similar but not as fierce.

Are they hydraulic, cable etc? - Bleed or adjust or leave as-is.

I need to get a manual for this one.

Dave

Nice one, downloading now :)

Also (here we go) :eek::eek:

It may be normal for a disco as the only other turbo i have driven is my Mondeo which is a fair bit lighter, but it seems low on power.

Now this may be because i dont know how to drive her yet - maybe changing up too soon / not revving her much etc (the mondeo will pull well from 30 in 6th gear) so maybe i need to educate myself.

If so, whats the best driving style? Change up early, rev it a bit? Change down to accelerate?

Next, we have an electric sunroof, there are two buttons above the rearview mirror both look the same. One seems to do nothing, t'other makes the rear of the glass drop/lift but thats all so im guessing theres a fault there ??

Thanks in advance for any help.

Dave

disco doesn't really do accelerating in any gear. best bet is to get the revs and speed up until it's shifting without revving the bollocks of her then change up and repeat for each gear. and change down to accelerate

Forget the sunroof 2nd button is slide open/close. But most people silicone them shut to cure the leaks. .

Chalk & cheese mate, forget how other "normal" car's drive when your in the Disco. It is slow on pick-up ... but get the gear change right and it's not too bad and of course you'll get used to it.

:D Sounds like my S3 station wagon used to be  difference is that the S3 ran out of puff at 60 and the disco walked sedately upto 70+ ;)

I need to drive her a bit i guess, see what makes her tick. I want to give her a filter / oil change first and maybe try and fix the headlining which is hanging in a couple of places. I was thinking on the way home from work today as we were bungling along at 65 that for a vehicle of 16 years old, its seems to be in pretty good nick, interior is very comfy, leather seats, aircon etc. especially when most cars of 10yrs+ are in the scrappy.

It seems water leaks are well known, where do i check for these??

Sure does feel good, excellent driving position again, gotta love a Landy.

Regular air filter changes help, has the EGR been blanked off, exhaust de-cated? Both these mods other a little bit of improvement, as will cleaning out the intercooler (all these covered on here many times;)).

Water leaks :

Alpine roof windows, sunroof's, n/s footwell usually from windscreen seal or down inner wing also check rear body pillar on o/s just below gutter as they rot there leading to water ingress, also get boot floor carpet up to check floor as they rot there quite readily.

And yes I totally agree, great driving position & comfort, I wouldn't want any other motor (except perhaps a Defender).

STill downloading the manual, so i dont know where the EGR is yet. Didnt know diesels had cats?

I am guessing i will have some water troubles as the rubber window seals are cracked in several places and have been bodged with stuff. Whats a better fix, mastic, sikaflex, umbrella ??

EGRValve002.jpg

EGR valve (braided hose leads to it)

The cat will be near the front of the Disco exhaust (just under passenger seat-ish).

The window's as far as I know have inner & outer rubber seals (someone will correct me soon enough if I'm wrong), personally all I've done to the cracked/spilt outer seals is fill them with black silicon.

Thanks i'll have a look, will i see much difference if i get rid of the EGR?

Thanks also to sierrafery for the sealant link.

Luvvin this site:)

Mine seemed more eager on pick-up, and I've gained a few MPG too, I get 31mpg + on a decent run (I also fitted a new intercooler pipe)!

Ok, i'l see if its still there, if so then off it comes. I had plenty of aggro with the EGR on my Mondeo so i know it can be a pain.

Yeah it's a good un, it's all the better if you've got thick skin & can take/dish the banter;)

No worries at all there:)

Had a look today and the EGR valve is not there, got a steel plate on manifold and the hose has been replaced with a non-branched one. Looks like it was done some time ago.

Well that's one job less and £20 more in your pocket;)

He he, no doubt i'll be needing that later

Last time i bought oil was was the series 3, i think it was about £12 / 5ltrs, i got 7ltrs for the disco engine yesterday and it was about £38! I have'nt bought any since the S3 as i get the mondeo serviced yearly and it does not burn any so needs no topping up.

I then realised i need to get some for the many boxes and swivels, better get a mortgage extension:eek:
