Been chasing EP90 leak from the felt washer on rear hubs (NAS 88" series 2a 1969) and have heard many different approaches to replacing these with a fresh set - any advise for the best chance of a leak free seal?

  • Have heard to soak the new felt washers in oil to expand them up
  • Have heard to trim them a tad in depth so that they compress (and dont stick out too far) and slot in nicely vs bulging out and getting twisted up upon tightening
  • Some on-line repair documents state the rubber side IN, while the Rover repair manual says OUT, I assume the rubber side out.
  • Compress the flat washer against the compressed felt washer in its slots so the metal (hub) to metal (flat washer) is in tight contact and tighten up and cotter pin.
Any consensus on this and recommendations? (I know it stops leaking when empty!).

Cheers

Make sure your axle breathers are clear, if they're blocked it'll push oil past the washers ...

I always put Felt washer rubber side out...

Greetings -
Breathers checked out good, this time I trimmed the felts down a tad so that they compressed well with the flat washer and made a tight seal. Rubber side out also done. Leaks (from there) are no more, yes there is still oil in it...... Thanks for the tips!
