I am hoping someone is going to tell me this is a simple fix but i fear it may be the end of my discovery's engine.

It's a 3.9 v8 with 140k and today as i was travelling down the M1 the temp gauge shot straight to the top. I had to carry on for a minute to the next services where I stopped. I opened the bonnet to find that the coolant hose had come off and there was no water at all left. I fixed the hose and filled the tank to the top and let the engine run for about 10 minutes and the tank stayed full and the temperature gauge stayed at half.
I got off of the services towards my house and I got another mile or so before the gauge started climbing quickly and I had to pull over. The coolant tank was empty again. I poured every drop of water I had into it which got it up to about 1cm from the bottom of the tank.
I then drove another mile home and as I pulled up on the drive the temperature had just gone onto the red again.

So I know that the head has probably cracked with the temperature or warped or the head gasket gone. But hopefully someone will be able to tell me something different.

3.9s are prone to block cracking behind liner as all but 3.5 diameter bore v8s are ,especially if allowed to get hot ,through ineffective rad cooling, poor thermostat ,low coolant ,hgf issue etc, though symptoms are similar and result will be hgf ,youd need to check them off

Sorry mate, but it sounds like HGF to me.... Going through similar issues at the moment myself
