Hello my name is Sam and I have a defender TD5. I'm out driving today I discovered that my temperature gauge is a little bit faulty. It runs well from start up but then goes from extremely high to recording no temperature at all. It will often quickly fluctuate between temperatures. I was wondering if you guys could offer a quick diagnostic process to fixing this problem. Kind regards Sam

Hi and WELCOME to the Forum :)
No diagnosis as my diagnostic crystal ball has been left at work.
But, an iff electrical connection, iffy sender, iffy gauge, or a mechanically iffy engine. But I'd start with the electrical connection although the simples one is an iffy coolant level.

Hi Discool,

Yes hoping it is electrical have a new sensor coming as they are cheap.

It goes to normal for around 20minutes of driving then jumps all over the place. If it goes too high the ecu will cut power to engine, but it only lasts at this reading for a split second. after around 40 minutes of driving goes the other way to completely cold. So I think it is something electrical. Coolant level is fine.

I will let you know how I go,

thanks for the help
