Hola,

So today while driving home I lost my rev counter, then when I got off the motorway there was a squeaking noise.

When I opened the bonnet the auxiliary belt had a strip torn off it which had pulled the plug off the rev counter and there were threads of belt all over the place.

The belt was changed at some point in the last two years, I don't remember when exactly but I remember it was caught by complete accident when the engine stopped in such a way that you could see a chunk out of the belt.

The question is, is this just bad luck or should I change the bearing in the tensioner as well and hope that fixes it?

Right so you know the rev counter plugs into the eh alternator, and the auxiliary belt spins that round and creates eltrickery through magic with magnets or something.

So when the belt started shearing it whipped out and knocked the plug for the rev counter off the alternator.

I think, either that or it was a massive stroke of luck that plugging something else back in made it work.

That bit is fine now, the belt shredding to pieces is my concern, the whole rev counter thing was just a fun anecdote about how I knew something had gone wrong before the noise started.

The black plug at the bottom, but again that whole part of the story is kind of academic now.

Check each pulley carefully and I bet one will be your problem!

On mine it was a worn PAS pump and the pulley pulled forwards out of line and was shredding belts. New PAS pump cured the problem.
