Hi Everyone. Just joined today and am looking for some help from the experts.
I have facelifted my 52 plate freelander but am having a problem with the headlights. I have used the plugs from a 2004 model and hopefully wired up correctly but every time I switch from dipped to main beam the dipped beam bulbs go out and only main beam remains illuminated.
Any assistance would be really great.

Thanks Steveth5

Erm........Int that how they're meant to be?

Do both filaments light up if you have the dipped beam on and flash yer main beam?

Hi Ratty
Yes if I flash the main beam and hold it in the on position all bulbs are illuminated. I looked at another late model freelander last week and both the dipped and main beam bulbs stay illuminated when main beam is switched on. This is also the same with my discovery which has the same tear drop type headlights.

this is a bit of guess work......Did your old headlights have an H4 type bulb (large bulb with 3 pins in the back)?

Do the new headlights have either 2x H7 bulbs (small headlight bulbs with 2 pins on the back) OR a H7 and an H1 (small bulb with just one connector on the back)?

I am pretty sure the old bulb was 3 pin although I don't have it with me to refer to as I am at work at the moment, the new ones are both 2 pin and one has H7 marked on it.
By the way thanks for the welcome and trying to assist me

Thats what I thought you'd say. The reason it is happening is because of your light switch/stalk.

The 3 pin bulbs are designed so that only one filament is working for a prolonged period at any point in time. When you switch from low to high beam it changes from one element to the other. When pulling the stalk back to flash someone it has both elements on but only for short periods. The reason for this is because if both elements were lit at the same time for a long period the heat build up would melt it.

With the twin bulb setups they have the bulbs in seperate housings so that they can both stay on at the same time.

Your light switch/stalk when flicked from the low to high bean setting cuts out the low beam and enables the high beam.

By the way thanks for the welcome and trying to assist me

No probs.:)

I too thought it might be something to do with the headlight switch stalk so at the weekend I took the one from disco and fitted it to the freelander and put the one from the freelander on the disco (they are both identical). The discovery worked perfectly with both bulbs staying on when switched to main beam and the freelander still did the same, headlamp bulb went out. Am really confused!!!

That narrows it down to the wiring to/from the switch then. Check what wires go live and when on your disco and then do the same on the freelander. I bet there is a wire missing/redundant on your freelander. Do both the vehicles multi-plugs have the same number of wires going into them on the connector that goes to the stalk?

Yes Buddy they both have the same number of wires at the switch/multiplug end.
I will check the live circuits when I get home and let you know how I get on
Thanks Again for the help

No probs.

As you've already tested the switch and found that it's capable of working both fuctions at the same time it's just a case of sussing out what the difference is in the wiring configuration of the two vehicles. Hopefully it will be easy to spot once the results are compared.

I'm with Ratty on this, it'll be wiring or a relay, as Ratty says the h4 bulb can't run both filaments for an extended period without overheating.

Did you manage to sort this problem out as I am having the same problem with my facelift light now!!!!!

can anyone please tell me which of the two lights on the facelift headlamp is full beam and which is normal and how do you manually adjust them please. If anyone has a wiring diagram of these lights I would be greatful!!!
This facelift is a little harder than I thought. Sorry to be a pain
