Hi all
well as it says,i went this afternoon to my local garage LR specialist to replace a knackered coolant hose along with its corroded metal pipe, after cooling my baby off and fixing the damn thing and upon cranking her up i got the chu-chu train sound, and upon inspection the guy told me that the exhaust manifold is leaking exhaust gaz into the engine compartment,he insited on replacing the entire exhaust manifold along with the gaskets,he said that the manifold cracks or get knackered and replacing only the gasket won't cure it...is it true?he said also that i must do it ASAP coz the hot gazes will heat up more the engine compartment.
as for the squeeking,he has diagnosed it to a uj and he said also it must be replaced ASAP.So 2 ASAP things to replace as long with an empty pocket....which one first?and what would u guys think about the whole?

upon further inspection,(just to add rangie is L.H,the fluff fluff sound is coming from the passenger side exhaust manifold),on top of the heatshield where the exhaust pipes are attached to the cylinder head i saw on the screws and the joining area with the cylinder head black stuff like the one found in the rear muffler tip,so for sure exhaust gazes are escaping from there.this stuff was present on the 3 cylinders joining pipes close to the bulk head.the other e.manifold is quite.

had the exhaust manifold replaced today it had several cracks on the y sections as well the flexi, plus that the edge of one of the gaskets was cracked and leaking, anyway replaced it along with the gaskets and bolts, fired the baby ow boy what a difference,i couldn't believe how the v8 is quite,it is like the engine is turned off, even noticed that the heat in the engine compartment is reduced.

Not unknown for the manifold welds to fracture, the r.h. one went on mine a couple of years ago. Managed to TIG weld it and it's been fine since. Replacement propshaft UJ is around £20 and the whole job can be done in around an hour if you have the tools (Decent circlip pliers and a good vice).

hey john good evening
nice to hear from u,...ur good?i read one of ur post about x raying the manifold,i believe it was u who did it right?nice approach.well at least it is replaced now, hope i wont replace it before 50 years at least :D:D
about the uj's i believe they r knackered coz when i look through the left front wheel arche i saw the uj shining (at least a part from the cross sort to say) i went under and try to shake the drive shafts, they r stiff though no movement at all,but i am sure uj must be removed to be checked properly, what is disturbing me now is that there is a play in the drivetrain and i can hear the shafts knocking on bumps or on acceleration, and when from N to R,a clunck is coming from the center to rear from the rear shaft going from the t box, dunno if it is t box or the uj,apart from the rear axle splines banging on reverse and full lock.jezzzzz dunno from where to start.
anyway enough nagging,cheers john.thank you

:welcome2: No it was not me that had the manifold X-rayed. I could see the crack clearly.
Regarding the propshaft UJ, have a look at the crosses as you call them and look for signs of rusty dust deposits, also grip the shaft itself and twist backwards & forwards whilst looking for play in the joints.
There is an excellent article by Busterbus on the "How to" section on the main forum page regarding UJ replacement.
