Hi everyone, I’m new to the Land Rover so asking for a little help.

Might seem like a silly question but would like to be sure... I have a 2010 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 got it cheap as it wouldn’t start.
Removed the starter motor and yes it’s toast. Pre-engage works/shoots out but won’t spin.
Anyway haven’t fitted a new one yet as I’m away but I removed the auxiliary belt to check nothing else was ceased or broken because I can not turn the engine over by hand. Using a socket and lever on the crank? Is this normal? or should the engine rotate... I would have thought it should just like other engines I’ve worked on, hence I’m a little bit worried that something might have failed internally.

Would love to get a no answer to my question actually so I could happily fit a new starter and drive along with the biggest smile on my face. lol

Did you have the injectors out ? the compression will make it difficult to turn the engine over by hand

No sir & thank you for replying. Usually I mess with petrols & yes I would have taken the plugs out to relieve pressure. I was thinking there’s massive torque from these engines too. I took the belt off to check the the alternator wasn’t seized, once I checked everything could spin freely I tried to rotate the engine by hand “clockwise from front” but wow the resistance. Then I got a little worried so went underneath thinking maybe starter motor is stuck in the engage position so removed it. As I said my test found that starter is knackered anyway but worried engine should spin by hand.

Got a horrible feeling the engine has snapped its crank, well documented

Really Hope I’m wrong

Might be an idea to remove the timing belt covers

Jesus wet hope you paid scrap price for it...

That’s what I was also thinking , not being rude to the OP but with these motors should have plugged a diagnostics in there and then before buying as we all know there not cheap to fix

Really hope it’s something simple and not a crank issue

Ok thanks all for the feedback, yes I’m worried I’ve got a major engine failure but will do all my checks, timing belt etc. I’ll keep you all updated.
I’m away in Hungary at present so will know more next week after I get back

Fingers crossed for u buddy it’s something simple , would really feel for u if it was a snapped crank

Think the next step will be to remove ur cam covers, can at least then look at the state of the cam belts and tensioners

Plse let us know how things go
