Hi everyone, I’mnew to the Land Rover so asking for a little help.

Might seem like a silly question but would like to be sure... I have a 2010 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 L320 got it cheap as it wouldn’t start.
Removed the starter motor and yes it’s toast. Pre-engage works/shoots out but won’t spin.
Anyway haven’t fitted a new one yet as I’m away but I removed the auxiliary belt to check nothing else was ceased or broken because I can not turn the engine over by hand. Using a socket and lever on the crank? Is this normal? or should the engine rotate... I would have thought it should just like other engines I’ve worked on, hence I’m a little bit worried that something might have failed internally.

Would love to get a no answer to myquestion actually so I could happily fit a new starter and drive along with the biggestsmile on my face. lol

Sounds like the engine is toast and that is why the starter motor has burnt out. It should turn, make sure you only turn in the correct direction, never counter rotate.

Should be able to turn it with a bar.
I hate to say it but these are renowned for snapping crankshafts!
    Hope it isn't that!
@gstuart might have a better insight.

Leaving it in Park would make no difference.

    Hiya

Saw the thread over the introduce section and indeed think the crank may have snapped

Also said there that I hope the OP hasn’t paid a lot for it as if another engine is req it won’t be cheap

Needs to remove the cam covers to see the condition of the belts and tensioners

Ok so I’m away at the moment but collecting as much info as poss before I get back to face this problem lol does the body need to be lifted off ? Obviously not to get to the belts but if engine has imploded wouldn’t there be lots of oil everywhere & a hole in the sump or block ??

A snapped crank would not always mean holes and oil everywhere, my renault van one snapped and there was no indication from the out side, but dropped sump and all became clear
You might be able to drop the sump and have a look may be easier than pulling all the bits top end and an oil change if not broken won't go a miss, good luck hope it's not gone.

It's basically the same engine as an s type jag so if you need a new engine you can pick those up for around a grand.

Unfortunately the S type jag won’t be any good in this instance , needs an engine out of an XF jag

For a tested half decent 3 x litre TDV6 engine ur looking at a min of £3-4K ,

Or buy a written off D4 / sport , engines that are worth having are around the £2k range but will have around 70-80,000 miles on the clock

So really take a Chance in one sense on buying a second hand engine, but they do come up

Brand new the engines are well over £10k , new crankshafts are £2k alone

    Hi

Looks like you’ve been taking it apart already as indeed know u wouldn’t have bought it like that

Please tell me that’s not an auction number as if it is you’ve got no come back what so ever unless there’s some form of return policy

My concern is for example u replace the engine and then find out the suspension doesn’t work or water has got into the electronics

Got Fingers crossed this goes well and is something simple , but can see if it is an engine ur looking at a min of £3k before u sneeze

Would u mind saying how much u paid for it please, of course tell me to mind my own business if u don’t wish to

My Porsche snapped a crank at 400 miles from new, no indications it just stopped.
