Hello.

I'm planning to start the TD to 200TDi conversion in my 90 this weekend - I'm kind of nervous and excited all at the same time (does that make me sad?)

I've organised the hire of an engine crane, but it doesn't come with a chain or lifting straps, etc. So my question is - what would be the most sensible thing to get? Should I get a single chain? A single strap? Several straps? And what length?

I know this is basic stuff for a lot of you - but this is a first for me!

Thanks in advance,
Ian.

I use a two foot length of chain with a shackle at each end to attach to the front and rear lifting eyes.Easy to move the position of the crane hook on the chain to get the required balance. You don't need one of them load leveller things.

you could do it with an old length of rope made by stripping the bark off a 100 trees, those levelers make getting things lined up a very easy, safe one man job - and cost as much as you'd pay for a suitable length of chain

:doh:pains me to say it but-he's right again.

I borrowed one off my mate a while back to try it. Didn't offer me any advantage over the nice piece of chain that I'd already got, but if you like it use it.

when you need to raise, lower, tilt forwards or backwards an engine you'll struggle to do that accurately with a length of chain

Engine came out today. :) Took me five and a half hours from opening the bonnet to plonking the TD engine onto the garage floor. Dunno if that's good or bad - but I do know that if it wasn't for all the excellent advice on this site, I'd still be out there now!

Ian.
