Engine Problem help

Hi

Wonder if anyone can shed some light on what might be the possible causes of the problem I experienced tonight driving home from work.

The temperature gauge was running very hot with the warning light flickering on and off so I take it I am losing some coolant somewhere.

Also quite alot of smoke coming from the exhaust but only really when the engine is idling or I knock it out of gear, can't notice much smoke when accelerating/driving normally.

Anyone give me some advice as to what the problem may be ?

ps. it's a 200tdi Disco 1

have you actually checked the coolant?
dont sound too good so far.
