i've got a 96, 2.5 BMW diesel and recently its starting to over heat but not all the time. it's back pressuring through the coolant tank.
the water pump and the thermastat are both fine.
Has anyone got any other ideas to what it could be?

air locks and rad, dunno if its the same radiator but if its the same one as the petrol they are a bag to get air out of!. i would get the engine tested just to make sure there's no issues with it and then change the rad if engine is ok!

before suspecting head gasket we had one that dragged in air from water pump and caused weird over heating, replaced it and it's still going.(could see scale from water pump relief hole and damp when hot
next would be thermostat or head gasket
