Hi all,
The new to me 1998 D1 V8 has an annoying fault and I don't know where to start.
EML is coming on and flashing randomly, this is accompanied by rough running, I switch the truck off take key out reset alarm and it will fire up fine, no EML light and running great.
there has been a few times with ignition on and without engine running the EML light will flash and I have not had engine running.
I have had ECU mate on and no fault codes present
The V8 is fitted with a Land Rover engine immobiliser with the green key fobs, looking at the pile of service history it was fitted a few years after first registered.
There is no pattern to this issue.
Any ideas where to start welcome :)

Ian

Ok it cold be a mine field with the EML randomly illuminated, u may see something about it in the LR service manual RAVE, fortunately I've never needed it, so never had to downloaded copy.
The "green fob" gives a question as the factory fobs for the D1 were black even it left the factory, but the security system has no bearing on the engine management.
Is you engine in good served condition ? Leads, plugs, connections at the coil clean and tight.

yeah could be ECU as you can get similar symptoms with modern Motorbike's.
Where is the ECU located on the 98 D1's
I can not see it behind cover drivers side foot well

I will go through the ignition system and make some checks.
Would the module on the side of the dizzie give the same symptoms?

Thanks
Ian

Sounds like power supply is being interrupted. This is a 3.9 and not 4.0, right? Clean up the underhood fusebox of any corrosion and replace the main relay. Its a metal cased dual pole single throw relay. There are 2, one is main ecu power and the other is fuel pump relay. They are in the passenger footwell next to the ECU on a LHD disco, dont know if they were relocated for RHD

Yes it is a 3.9.
I will give all the electrical connections, fuse box a check and clean and change the relays, I have plenty of spares.

Thanks
Ian

ECU is in the drivers footwell above the relay bank, the amplifier module is by the coil bolted to the slam panel anything different then there's been some alterations.

Thank All, I am going to have a look at some of the potential faults areas on the V8 today.
Not had a chance this week as I have been prepping my 300 TDI for its MOT and I had some one coming to buy it.
300 passed its MOT with advisories.
The sale is not going ahead so I will post it in the for sale section.

Thanks all for the info given
Ian
