engine malfunction light??

hi all. I only seem to come on here when I have problems

The wife drove the 04 TD4 to work this morning fine, then when she tried to start it to come home, it wouldn't have any of it.....The engine malfunction light is on (the amber one with an exclamation mark in it) and although it is turning over fine, and there is fuel (although not a lot) it is not even firing....she swears it ran fine to work....no loss of power ect....

Any ideas what it might be??? (apart from blimmin expensive

)

Try putting more Doozle in and try again. . . . . and see if the light go's out. . . . .if yes then get back onn ear

just got back......its outside the wife's work.

Put more juice in, spun it over, cock all happened

my AA wasn't renewed (credit crunch/recession) but the wife has a green flag jobbie with the bank account.......if they can get it home i can play with it...I guess i can't do a thing until it gets hooked up to the diagnostic thing tho.......

had a look on gaybay and saw some diagnostic things for about £30 delivered......are these worth it???

REET few basic checks fer yer. . . . fuel cut out switch [RHS inside bonnet at the back] press red button to re set [hard to find] all fuses to do with ems and fuel and pre heaters [glow plug system] . . . . .test= switch on ignition [engine not running ] put hand on engine fuel pump [rear wheel arch on yours] shuld vibrate for bout 12secs then stop [if not could be a fuel issue] . . . . . . stick foot hard to floor and try starting [if yes then could be leccy to ecm fing u/s,its a fly by wire system, ie no steel cable] make sure your rubber turbo hoses int split. . . . . . .enuff fer now

the plan this morning is to get a mate who has a diagnostic thing to plug it in and see if he can reset the light........then take it from there.I'll keep you posted........

tried all the things you suggested apart from the fuel pump thing??? is it under the plastic in the o/s wheel arch? I had a good grope round and couldn't find it......nothing worked

look on the front chassis leg for the fuel lines. You will see a sensor there with a wire on it. Pull the wire off. Does it start now? If yes your rear fuel pump is weak and knackered. The sensor is the fuel pressure regulator.

If that doesn't work, have a look at the injector rail. Check the sensor wire on it is clean. They often turn green or brown. If yours is looking gunky clean it and re-fit and then try again.

thanks Ratty, can I just ask which side of the chassis? and how can I access the fuel pump?

is the sensor on the injector rail easy to spot??ie, not hidden behind more of the flippin plastic??

Give me a beetle engine and I can strip it down and rebuild it....one of these buggers is like starting from scratch all over again!!

I think it's the passenger side. (am working from memory as I don't work on freelanders that often). Just look for the fuel feed and return pipes that come from the rear and up to the engine.

You'll have to look for the pump yourself I'm afraid. I just work on em on the roadside so I listen out for wether it buzzes or not and don't get involved with removing em.

(Again from memory) I think you may have to remove the engine cover. I think it is on the drivers side of the injector rail and is easy to spot.

good news!!!!

The kind bloke from green flag came out and after a bit of messing with some cold start down the air intake he worked out it was a fuel problem of some sort......I persuaded him to lay on the ground in the snow to show me where the fuel pump is and whilst down there, he gave it a bit of 'percussion therapy' with the clenched fist technique and it started first go!!!

he reckons it could have froze???...It might have a bit of ****e in it or the filter, I reckon.....

anyway, going to put up another post in a minute for a definitive list of service items I will need and I'm going to service the bugger myself when the weather gets a bit better
