Engine Is Reving on its own ???

How many miles has this car done and is there blue smoke from the exhaust?

48000 miles and We have not noticed any blue smoke i dont think their is but not 100% sure

Okay, there is a reasonable chance that this is not turbo oil seal failure then (Engine oil leaks through turbo compressor oil seal and into the engine inlet maniford. It is burnt at a higher rate than the diesel that is being injected. Such conditions can lead to the engine accelerating uncontrollably until either the engine literally flies apart or siezes due to a lack of lubrication oil). You see why I asked the question.

Freelander diesels are 'fly by wire'. The throttle pedal position is sensed electronically and this data fed to the Engine Management Unit to provide a throttle demand. It has been known for the Throttle Position Sensor to go faulty and provide a errored demand signal to the ECU. It could also be due to a fault with one of the other engine sensors that is causing the engine to operate incorrectly. The first thing to do is to get this engine plugged into a diagnostic system and the fault codes read. This may well give a clue as to the nature of the fault.

There is a switch operated by the clutch and located just above the clutch pedal. When you press the clutch this causes the ECU to reduce engine speed to assist smoother gear changing. From what you say about the problem being worse when changing gear it may be worth investigating?

Didn't know that, as I haven't yet had any problems here, but good info for the future.
