Engine has No power

Hi all, I need some advice. While I was driving home on the motorway my car started to loose power progressively. By the time we got home she could only manage 60 mph. The turbo wasn't spooling up at all. I've checked for air leaks (none). The lift pump is working fine, I've also checked all the turbo hoses and no collapse of delamination and there is no undue play in the turbo. The waste gate actuator isn't moving when the engine is rev'd and there is not boost at all.

My question is am I right in thinking that the actuator has failed or is there something I've missed?

A silly one,

but have you checked the slack in the throttle cable by the injection pump?

Sorry forgot to mention that one, yes I have there's no slack when fully depressed and the engine revs very strong without hesitation. Just no boost power

Hi,

I was thinking of slack in the cable when the pedal is released and in the up position.

You won't get any meaningful boost just revving it at idle (needs to be under load) and therefore the actuator won't move. How do you know you have no boost (do you have a gauge?). There is also a black plastic pipe that runs from a T piece near the actuator over to the top of the injection pump, this controls the additional fuel needed when on boost. Make sure the pipe is still connected at both ends and not blocked or leaking as a starter

You haven't said what type of vehicle, but I'm presuming Ferrari, Aston Martin or similar?

Hi AL203, the problem was sorted with the help of all the other guys who worked out that when I posted on the 300 tdi forum I was talking about a 300 tdi engine. But thanks for pointing that one out

The reason I put my post on was because you said after progressively loosing power she could only manage 60mph. Mine does 60mph on a good day

Hahahaha, sorry mate I thought you were ragging me. My 1995 300 tdi 110 CSW (the one in the picture) will happily plod along at 80 all day long. Problem turned out to be the lift pump was dying. It would pump strongly on the priming handle but It was wheezing like an asthmatic under load. Hence the power loss when at speed

Pleased you got it sorted.
That's impressive speed though. My 300Tdi 90 will do 70mph ok, but I rarely push it to that for a few reasons. My fuel consumption goes up a canny bit when I horse it, noise and it's a bit bobbly and not such a relaxing drive at 70.

I generally cruise on the motorway at 70 when I'm there. But when in Europe on Hols, 80 is comfortable. I've fitted dynamat sound proofing to sort the noise issue and poly brushes sorted out the "bobblyness" . It's taken me 5 years and there's still more projects I've got planned.
