Engine / Engine management light problems

Hi All,

Just got back from a short trip and when I put my foot down the Engine management light came on and the power dropped off, when I took my foot off the peddle it went out and never came on again until I needed to put my foot down again. normal driving and that means very steadily accelerating it does not come on, only when i want more power.
Its a 2006 TD4 with only 53000 on the clock has anyone got any advice what it is, and what to do next.

Could be fuel pump failing codes would tell you

thanks very much for the advice, i take it when it goes on the computer everything will show. Next question will any diagnostics computer tell me the "code" as I have a garage over the road or will it need to go to a LR specialist.

Depends what's up with it but usually a cheap code reader should get and clear the codes. My worry would be fuel pumps if it does it flat out, poss high pressure one or low pressure not supplying enough to it! But it depends on the codes.

just had it checked out by the Mechanic, he says its the fuel delivery pump monitor, his advice was to get a new fuel filter first, and see how it goes, fingers crossed its ok now.

to cut a long story short I got a new fuel filter and after a day or so the light came back on again, so I found Doug Dransfield a LR specialist to have a look.
his diagnosis was a new fuel pump and so far so good.

Update from the problems was after the fuel filter was changed the enginemanagement light came on again, so instead of going to amateur garages I went to Doug Dransfield in stocksbridge a LR specialist, he ran it over the diagnostics and a full check and diagnosed it as a duff fuel pump. One week later and all is well.

Same thing has just started happening to mine (2006 Td4). Which Fuel pump was at fault? I understand there are two... Low pressure and high pressure?

Reading the post it's the low pressure one.
This can be found just in front of the offside rear wheel arch. The low pressure pump is in a housing complete with the cylindrical shaped fuel filter.
The Bosch high pressure pump is in the engine bay close to your oil filter.
Always worth looking at the plug on the sensor on the end of your fuel rail as these are prone to green up and cause problems.

Also, you don't happen to know what the foam bit is for do you?

I think you will find that the TD4 of that vintage only has the pump under the drivers side rear wheel arch, same as my 55 plate TD4.

Think sijwhite is referring to the hp pump that charges the common rail fuel system as the other pump and not the earlier pump in tank models.

LP Pump changed along with the MAF Sensor and hoses. I think the fault was caused by a very corroded earth attachment to the fuel filter assembly. Anyway all rectified and now the car is running really well.

In my 2006 Freelander I have replaced the low pressure fuel pump and the high pump to no avail. i have also replaced the sensor on the end of the fuel rail and I still have bother. it has been to land river specialists and still its showing low pressure fuel on the computer.The management light comes on at approx, 2500 revs. stopping, switching the engine off and restarting clears the fault. where do i go next!!

Just a long shot but mine stared smoking and missing at 2000rpm.
And it gave a low fuel pressure reading.
It's turned out that I need new fuel lines as that say one has collapsed

Î have similar problem with my Freelander MK1 TD4 2003 as described by SEACAT.
Fault Code is P 1190. I already changed the MAF sensor and I will change the fuel filter today, 4 years old with 20.000 miles done.
How did you fix your problem SeaCat ?
Next steps :
Could be the fuel high pressure sensor at the end of the injection rail (above the EGR) ?
Could be the low pressure fuel pump at the right rear side ?
Anything else ?
