hi, sorry to be a pain again - ever since i bought this freelander i have had nothing but problems with it. the car is very difficult to start first time once going it runs but sounds like its miss firing - very lumpy & shakey tick over. when its travelling it feels ok. the car is a td4 2004. so i have taken it to my local 4x4 garage. straight away said it was the injectors, they tested them while i was there by removing the the leads one at a time. not the injectors they said. i thought it my be the fuel pump after reading some threads on here - the one under the wheel arch i can hear for the 20 secs or so. the one in the tank i can't hear. the garage has said that the one in the tank is only for the fuel gauge & isn't a pump i have looked at the top of the pump or what ever it is & it is different from the pictures i have seen before. it has a square block on top & four fuel pipes or breather pipes off it. the one i have seen before only has two fuel pipes & no square block on top - this is why i think it has a built in pump,i have disconnected the feed to the thing - it has two wires going to the connection block & the fuel gauge does drop to empty. also the fault code when plugged in to the garages computer is p1613 engine stability controller - this has stumped them as they have no idea what that code is. can any one help me please - before the car blows up or i do. thanks

HELLO EARTHLING WIZARD  Reet if the fuel pmp is in the rear [wheel arch] then you've only one pmp,[i think but double check] if its in the front rhs looking at the engine ,then you've two ,tother is in the tank, if you switch on the ignition [engine not running] lp pmp [lp=low pressure] or pmps ,should run for around 15-20 secs [this is a good Ming rule of thumb] and an indication that the lp pmp or pmps are healthy. . . . .however its still worth changing you fuel filter as well as the code you mentioned is a lp indicator , also if pmps are intermittent or stopped [not running] then check fuel pmp fuse and also the relay. . . .hope this helps you. . . .Ming the Merfiless :) :) :)

thank you, the fuel pump is in the wheel arch. i bought one new & have changed it today. the fuel filter was changed about two months ago. the new pump takes more time to turn off, around 30 to 40 seconds & once the engine is running it starts up again - you can hear it from outside the car. is this normal, i have checked the fuse this is ok. i don't know where the relay is, can you give me an idea & how will i know if its working or not, thanks

I got as far reading your post as the bit where your local 4x4 garage disconnected each injector plug in turn. Find a new bloody garage that knows what they are doing.TD4 running/starting issues are in the most part easy to diagnose - by someone who knows what they are on about.

The code definition you give sounds like it's connected to the misfiring, might even be due to them 'testing the injectors' :D .

I would think that injector trouble is the most like reason for the engine being lumpy/misfiring and the bad starting.

thanks for your replys,i have spoken to mobile car repairs guy today who is going to come & have a look at it. i tried it today after changing the fuek pump yesterday. it started a little better but not first time & there is loads of white/grey smoke coming from the exhaust - the smoke has a funny smell to it as well, one of the good things is the lumpyness seems to have gone - but i'll find out if it has tomorrow on the way to work.

Couple of things that may sort out the smoking......

try a strong dose of millers or forte diesel treatment.

change the crankcase breather filter.

hi,all again. i've had a mobile guy slaving over the car for the last few days - he has checked the injectors with a bleed off test all ok, he found that one 1 glow plug was working so changed them ( last time i buy cheap off ebay the old ones only been in the car 4 months) he found that a relay to the glow plugs had burnt out - changed that, the wires to something he did tell me but i've forgot had been crushed by the one of the covers so he sorted that, hes cleaned out the air intake as that was sutted up, i had already changed the fuel pump under the wheel arch. so put the key in turned it over & no change still won't start first time - hes now wondering if there is another fuel pump - i have told him that this model only has one pump - but hes not convinced.

I'm wondering if this could be similar to my recent experience - suspected injector problems, but turned out to be fuel pressure regulator?
It's also worth checking wiring harness/connectors to fuel rail sensor - apparently corroded terminals can cause problems.
If injectors are the cause - I have a recon set going spare for a sensible price!;)

just to poke my nose in,i have been led to believe that the td4 has 3 fuel pumps 1 hp the engine end and 2 at the rear .the wheel arch one and another in the tank.also norbet has a good point with checking out the fuel pressure regulator. tim.

thanks for your replies. we.ve been away with the car for a few days & the engine is running fine & we've pulled our caravan back up the m5 no problems. it's just the starting problem which is still an issue & now the front screen heater has stopped working - this was working before the work took place, so i will have a look under the bonnet to see if something hasn't been reconnected.

Did you try the injector cleaner in the diesel tank??

I still think your code re engine stability is the ecu failing to compensate for an injector imbalance.

Alternatively you could remove the injectors for servicing by a specialist but i'd try the diesel treatment first.

I've got a 04 TD4 and thought that there were 2 pumps, 1 in the rear wheel arch, Low pressure, with filter and the other, High pressure, in the engine bay....
