All,
I'm new to this forum as I've just got hold of a 01 freelander.
The car is currently off the road - the previous owner broke the engine due to lack of oil.
I would like to tow with the vehicle (wife has horses) and will use it on farm tracks frequently.
Ideally, I would like to put the TD4 engine into the vehicle so that it remains standard (ish) for insurance purposes.
Has anyone else carried out this conversion / does anyone know the parts that will need to be changed eg
ecu
engine
gearbox
wiring loom
fuel filler
lift pump/tank gubbins :)
fuel lines (change or add more?)
exhaust
intruments

Would it be better to get hold of a donor (difficult due to lack of space) or order parts one at a time?

thanks for your help - i'll return the favour when I can.

Gregor

One of the other members looked into this about six months ago as he had a rolled Td4 with good mechanicals but decided that it was too much work. You're definitely looking at a donor vehicle if you choose to go ahead.

buy an 1.8 engine or rebuild the one you got, then sell the vehicle

if you have any profit, buy a good TD4 Auto.

Any other approach will likely cost you double when all the bills have settled.

Having thought about it, I'll be fitting a 2nd hand 1.8 K16 (£400-600 from EBay). This way the majority of the components will be the same.
Will also change the thermostat to the PRRT type and carry out a major service before fitting. Will possibly inspect to see if the later type head gasket and bolting system has been fitted, depending in age.

Thanks for your advice.

Remember to make sure the engine is the same type as yours as I believe the ecu's were different for the VVC engines.
