Hi all

I don't know how many of you people live in and around London who might be affected by the new emission Zone. I live in Romford which is just in the zone.
I have found out that my 1999 90 TD5 defender will not pass the emission zone target for 2010. I know its a long way off but if you are like me You normally get a landy and have it for years, but because of the emission zone(thanks to ken Livingstone)If I want to use my landy it will cost me £100 per day, which is a complete no no.
I have looked in to this and it doesn't matter if its a county, pick up or van you will still have to pay.Something to do with the weight.
Landys after 2002 will pass the emission(unless they change that)However these one will be paying £400 a year in Road tax
I think its a bloody disgrace.
I going to have to sell my landy ,which like most of you have spent a good deal of money on because of this. I wouldn't mind but i don't go into London with it

Register it as a minicab - no congestion charges, just 6 monthly MOTs.
Or register it as a private ambulance (tell DVLA you intend to use it as a voluntary ambulance at off-road events) - no congestion charge and no road tax!
 
The in laws live in walthamstow........................I don't have to go and see them anymore ! Yipeeeeeeee !
 
What are Londoners doing to fight these ridiculous charges - just seems yet another tax on people's enjoyment.
Emissions and climate change heard it all before, just go on holiday to Florida and you will see that regardless of what we do here it won't make a difference, they all drive large engined vehicles and moan when the price of petrol rises a few cents.
Think its time the man in the street fought back, incidentally when is the next election
 
The bit that makes me laugh is the fact that Heathrow airport falls within the new 'emmision zone'... How much ****e an pollution do those bastid planes chuck out?!

Good point. Trouble is a hell of a lot of joe public have fallen for the whole environmental bull**** hook, line and sinker. The govt know this and are taking the **** out of the motorist big time. It does seem like londoners have just rolled over and accepted these new taxes how long will it be before they're rolled out to everywhere else if they get away with it so easily.

has anyone ACTUALLY done either of the above?apart from jeremy clarkson I dont know of anyone bothering/knowing how or successfully doing these things?any ideas on how ya go bout doin it POST IT!there must be heaps of regulations to register as a minicab nevermind a private ambulance??
 
I'm concerned too, I have a 1990 110 in the zone.
When entered into the LEZ checker says not affected by 2008 rule. Doesn't mention 2010 rule. Another defender plate entered does. My T reg Golf displays the same result as my landy. I had to change the DVLA logbook from Disabled,and entered PLG Private Light Goods vehicle.
Not sure if this makes a difference??
We shall see.

Same problem with mine, I think it's because it says "truck, utlity" on the log book.
I will probably fit a 2.25 petrol engine to mine.
The whole things a farce.
 
my old company 110s and 90s as works vehicles and due to the lez we are closing our london office and moving to oxford and as of 2010 we will apply a surchare of £780 pw to work in london this is on top of the £2000 per month it currently cost us to park and pay congestion in london so it wilno longer be viable to work there this will mean job loss,s in london

It looks like TFL are finally putting their change of stance regarding Land Rover Defenders in writing. As we stated last month TFL confirmed to us verbally that a ‘reclassification process’ was scheduled to take place sometime over the next two years that would effectively exempt Defenders in private hands from the Low Emission Zone charge. The key point there was that they would only VERBALLY confirm this. However it would appear that they are now giving these assurances IN WRITING to people that challenge the current classification of their Defenders as being ‘non-compliant’ and subject to the daily £100 fine. This is what they said:

“Thank you for your enquiry regarding the compliance status of your Land Rover. I can now confirm that we are working towards changing the status of Land Rover Defender’s to ‘not subject to LEZ’ as long as they are used for private use and not commercial. This may take some time so I would advise that you either wait for us to make the necessary amendments which could take more than 6 months or you can register your vehicle with ourselves by returning a completed compliance application form along with a photocopy of your vehicle registration form. If you have any questions regarding the Scheme you may find it useful to visit our website, just log on to www.tfl.gov. uk/lezlondon. You may also telephone our Contact Centre on 0845 607 0009, Textphone 0207 310 8999 (if you have impaired hearing), where a member of staff will be more than happy to help. Thank you for contacting Transport for London.”

A bit of hassle, but would save the cash....
 
Thread revival!!

Desperate for some clarification if anyone can help. I've seen an ex army 110 2.5 diesel hard top I'm interested in. It's not registered yet but am worried about buying it then finding it is subject to emission zone charges (total deal breaker for me).

I've looked up a few similar Landys online & used the TfL check website and most have come up as exempt - most not all!

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Is the info re. Private use above definitely correct?

Depends on when they register the vehicle they classify it as a utility vehicle or as PLG....

Some hard top Land Rovers which have been converted to passenger vehicles by adding side windows and rear seats are still classed as utility vehicles and are subject to the LEZ....whereas if they were changed to PLG they wouldn't be.

It all rides on how the vehicle is de-mobbed and re-registered as a civilian vehicle. Who is making the initial registration? Can you talk with them and get it classified as a PLG?

Also, I wouldn't go by the LEZ vehicle checker, we had a Ninety Truck Cab that when you put the VRM in the checker it came up as exempt, but after a couple of weeks of driving into Heathrow, we received a warning letter telling us to stop or we'll be prosecuted - I wrote back to them with details of the vehicle, screenshots of their vehicle checker and asked for a clarification - they kindly wrote back and said the online vehicle checker is not a valid way of checking exemption (WTF is it there for then?) and also they contacted the DVLA and the DVLA has the vehicle registered as a light utility vehicle and as such is indeed subject to the LEZ - checked the V5C and, yep, it was registered as a Light Utility Vehicle.....a few days later I re-checked the LEZ vehicle checker and the status of the car had changed and was now liable to the LEZ.

Thanks, this is what I was worried about! I will have to think about a SW or petrol engine to be 100% certain!

Hi Saint,

My 90 is listed on the V5 as "taxation class PRIVATE/LIGHT GOODS (PLG).

But it is not LEZ compliant. This is because it is listed as body type a LIGHT 4X4 UTILITY made before jan 2002 it fails.
