Just found out my EGR valve is wasted!! My garage has removed it and blanked it off and says this is a common problem and blanking off will not do any harm and probably give better results in running and fuel economy, do we agree or not?

Cleaning tha inlet manifold and ports is not a pleasent job. I would be surprised if many garages would take it off, let it soak in degreasent, then clear out all the goock. It’s really some of the nastiest sticky black stuff there is. Not a hard job, but I can’t imagine that many, unless being paid dearly, would spend the same amount of time and effort as the vehicle owner would in making it all clear again.

Certainly worth asking what they did clean, and if there is no mention of removing the inlet manifold, and clearing out all the ports, and the sensor that lives in the manifold, it’s job worth doing yourself properly. There can quite easily be 8mm or so thick crud coated all over the inside of the manifold and engine ports.

Quite satisfying to put it all back together all cleared out.

I picked up a manifold which was spotless and the blanking plate is going on with it a week today fingers crossed but thanks for the heads up about the gunk build up, the mechanic said everything was very clean which was nice and I do trust him which is good in these days of Oooooooh, oh, well........... :)

I note you have a FL2 in your avatar pic, is this the FL you are having the manifold changed on ? if so do you have photo of it before it is fitted, also what plate are they using a solid one or one with an hole in ?

Sorry the new manifold has been fitted and the blanking plate is being made rather than buying one, I let my mechanic worry about the details but like I said I trust him and he does all my work for me
