EGR Valve - Good or Bad?

Since I didn't record verifiable figures on fuel consumption or anything else before I blanked and removed the EGR, nor did I make any relevant measurements after it had een removed, I don't think I'm the best person to verify or refute the science.
In other words, "Look at the face, am I bovvered?"

I'm not bovvered. ...just interested.

I can see how a leaking or stuck open valve is detrimental but that is easily cured by inspection and cleaning.

The received wisdom here and many other places is that an egr delete is an engine improvement mod when this guy is suggesting it's a bodge to improve running with a faulty valve but not as good as a properly functioning one.

what throttle openings are there on a tdi or any diesel

Stumbled across this http://www.tuneruniversity.com/blog/2012/05/dont-block-or-remove-the-egr-valve-its-saving-you-money/

Basically the guy is saying the egr valve effectively makes the engine 'smalller' at low throttle/ low power demands and removing it increases fuel consumption.

That goes against the anecdotal evidence I've seen on here.

Anyone want to refute the science?
you need to read the reasons he quotes then look at how the engines work were egr removal is recommened

Yep I see that now, it's been a while since I've had a doozil and I've got my petrol head on :)

It would still suggest that a properly functioning valve isn't detrimental to a diesel at least and removal isn't an improvement in itself.
why it creates acids that accumulate in the oil and chokes the inlet manifold ,leaks in the valve reduce turbo boost

Do you get a similar cooling effect in a diesel? I guess you must as it's the production of NOX it's designed to reduce.

Does that have an effect on overall engine temperature?
its done to reduce combustion temps at lower revs not overall temps, youd need to change efficiency for that not emissions

The reason why I took it off was that I couldn't see the benefit of trying to burn already burnt gases. I tend to think that an engine works better with clean air going into it.

don't know how it affect the mpg on the disco but done mine on the hippo and did seem to help it run smoother

is supposed to improve the turbo to spin up easier

did recently remove my map sensor on the d3 and was blocked solid , seen quite a few pics where the egr pipes also block up
