I fitted the EGR blanking kit to my 2005 TD5 last night. Blanked off the vacuum pipes to EGR and unplugged electric plugs to 2 solenoids. Advice on the net seems to be conflicting: some say that ECU will now realise that EGR not available and adjust accordingly. Other people do not mention unplugging.
I am having the JE motorworks Tune + next week and they mention switching off the EGR function. Not that keen for that, as will have to return to them if it needs to be re-installed for any reason.
So my question is- will the ECU now recognise EGR defunct ?
 
Generally accepted that breathing oily, smoky exhaust fumes bad for engine and reduces longevity. Gums up intake manifold and sensor.
Not fitted to rest of world spec and will be taking this landy to do circular rout of southern Africa.

All these things are serviceable and if you want it to stop breathing oily air remove the turbo charger as well. You may also like to look at the "New rules for MOT 2018" thread. :D
 
Your reply seems a bit combatative-any reason ?
It seems a bit STUPID to remove a necessary component and comparing it to a useless "big brother" component.

You said breathing oil damaged the engine. Any oil it breaths through the EGR valve comes from the turbo. It will continue to breath oil after the EGR valve has gone. Yes it was a little jocular quip.

It depends on the fuel map config ID, it can recognise it or not but dont bother with that, just unplug the solenoids and isolate well the plugs as to not touch earth and even if you'll have an "EGR stuck closed" fault code logged this will not affect the engine's behaviour, also if that EGR delete in the soft is not extra charged by the tuners better do it and then even if you'll have to refit the valves the EGR will not open to let exhaust gas in the inlet and i doubt that they'll plug in a tester at the MOT station to check for the tune configuration.... as i saw in other post if you let the engine cover on nobody will know if you have EGR or not as long as the solenoids are still there and plugged in cos afaik they dont have the right to take off the engine cover... as about the environment, only a 100% well working EGR will have good effect for that cos an old clogged or stuck system will make the emissions worst than without it
 
Yes, there will always be some oil from the turbo, but much more sludge and carbon build-up above and in EGR valve as diesel smoke is pretty horrible stuff.

one less item to service along with other things

depending on build date the engine then becomes a euro spec for example a euro 2 or 3 engine does not need to meet euro 4.. 5 ..6 or 7 specs

even a new turbo may bleed .... nature of the system

unfortunately its natural for a charged engine to breath more than a naturally aspirated engine. so why dont we just remove the engine ? ..or maybe just add in a catch can ... every little bit helps right

another example how many old trucks on the road to this day that dont have EGR systems and the breather pipe is direct to atmosphere... do these need to meet new 2018 emissions ?

yes emissions are getting tighter as we speak some manufactures moved away from the EGR and installed urea systems (addblue ) some manufactures also combined both EGR and urea... but they can be deleted and tricked also with the correct tools and software /hardware

my egr has been deleted for some time over a few years....engine oil stays cleaner for longer due to less carbon contamination ...no more map sensor clogging nor intake clogging this means i can spend more quality time else where like in the bedroom :)

why would you want your investment to inhale an inert gas ?

like i said its natural for a charged engine to have more blow by ( BREATHING ) for example 15 to 19 psi of pressure on top of a piston compared to a naturally aspirated engine

blow by has contamination of carbon or even dust that the air cleaner may of missed along with the combustion process

a little trick i learned due to my trade

remove your dipstick and wipe with index finger.. now rub index finger and thumb massaging the oil does it turn clear ?

why would you want your investment to inhale an inert gas ?

Yep i'll live with that. Specially if the engine is an high miler. It does pay to change the oil in any diesel engine at half the makers recommended mileage. But the EGR only comes on at cruise never under load so there will be nothing like full boost when it is operating.

this was the hole idea of the egr system they worked out that a vehicle does more time cruising light traffic work so the EGR is then active also its not active at idle
but your forgetting
the build up of carbon with mixed breathing gasses
over time the intake plenum becomes sludged up or baked
this sludge can move due to heat soak even after an EGR delete

this is why i removed my intake manifold and burnt out the carbon build up only to find the intake ports 20 % coked up reducing size

under full boost are you suggesting your piston rings have a 100% seal under full boost

blow by does not switch off regardless of boost levels to be honest its actually the other way round more boost means more blow by regardless how old or new

Anycase- delete done and immediate improvement in performance and smoothness. Egr valve and intake manifold fairly clean. Then Tune+ and even better! Chalk and cheese! Next stop upgraded oil pump as per German landrover engineer friend.
 
I have not read the new MOT procedures fully but i can imagine that any EGR unit removed or disabled will be a fail.

was chatting to a mot examinier and he said with the new rules that if any vehicle regardless of age or engine had an egr fitted at the factory and was removed it will indeed be an instant fail

along with being able to check through the vin of what was and wasn’t fitted
