hi

what is the general opinion on egr blanking please and mots

know there been a lot of talk about this

spoken to a few mot testers in the past and they've said as long as the emissions are ok it's not a problem

yet speaking to another tester he said it's a no, no

as always sorry asking dim questions

Looking back at the MOTs of mine it has a long history of scraping through on retest emissions. I recently had my EGR blanked and it failed next MOT. After some enthusiastic driving up a local hill it passed.

EGR removal is never an MOT failure - I guess it could be an advisory but never a failure. DPF removal is an MOT failure but I don' think that affects any of us (maybe a D4/5)

Thats called an Italian tune up:D

cheers guys

think after scraping out half a ton of crap out should allow the engine to breath better

spent a while cleaning the throttle body out, removed the butterfly and put the bar back, now blanked the throttle body side

just got to now blank the engine side

can then after testing the engine fit the synergy tuning box, will be interesting to see before and after results

The fact is that an old EGR which is full of dirt eventually not working 100% well will have bad effect on emmisions instead of improving them so IMO getting rid of it is a win-win situation ... provided the vehicle's management is not set to go into an error stage without it...afaik no probs on the D3 with that

many thks

mines a pre 2007 so don't need the ecu patch to blank them

will be interesting to see how it is after i blank them, then will get on a fitting the tuning box , got to also install the dashboard switch , two settings eco and power

will brim the tank to see how the mpg performs

had one of these tuning boxes before and really transformed the engine , so only time will tell how this one shapes up

Rather than going for a tuning box, Gary, I would prefer to go for a proper remap. Try Mike at Dynachip.

thks, already got the box, been dealing with ron who designed synergy for over 7 x years and found then to be very good

of course each person has there own preference

had one on my td 4 and transformed the engine

will indeed see what it's like after i've fitted it

remaps range from around £400 plus which i can't warrant that kind of money

I don't think that Dynachip are that expensive, even for a D3. The homepage on their website claims "Diesel remapping £225 at your home or work place", without mention of vehicle type. Might be worth a telephone call to find out:-

looks a decent remap price

think because i've had a synergy before and been happy with it i've stuck to the same company

also having the eco and power button inside the cab , still got to fit after i've refitted the throttle valve , is still in soak

will be interesting to see how the tuning box performs

arrived this morning

appreciate though the heads up

no, removed the wastegate completely

Different thing entirely, wastegate normally refers to the turbo actuator which on a D3 is full electronic as turbo is a VGT, unlike a std D2 which is a plain jane easy to get to turbo.
What you have removed is the EGR butterfly, these were first seen on later land rover products when the later 15P TD5 engine came along and the idea is when the EGR activates the flap closes so the engine draws in more exhaust gases.

.....will be interesting to see how the tuning box performs
It will give you better throttle response and more power but better disable it for MOT cos it might have a bad effect on the emissions...these tuning boxes are just simply tricking the injector's management and usually increase the EGT, not the best thing you can do to the engine's life.... remap is the correct way

Ive seen scary egts with a remapped TD5, 1000degc wasnt unusual, how accurate the thermocouple was Im not sure but it did crack the turbo casing after a few thousand miles!

At idle even turning the a/c on made the egt rise 10/20 degc, I also had a thermocouple just after the air filter housing and again switching the a/c on raised the temp of the incoming air

I would love to know how a remap gives more power over a plug in chip without raising the egt?

I should have said "a well done remap is the correct way" ...in your case or the remap was sh*t or some other problem... mine is properly remapped and didnt see above 650 ever

EGR is fitted to reduce Nox production. There is no test for Nox in the Diesel MOT, just a test for smoke. On early EGR systems the operation cannot be read by diagnostics up to EU 2 regulations. On EU 3 regulations and on EGR operation can be read by diagnostics. The EU proposed a couple of years ago that a malfunctioning or disconnected EGR as read by diagnostics would be an MOT fail. The UK has not adopted those regulations as yet. So a disconnected EGR cannot fail the MOT at the moment. Providing a tuning box does not produce excessive smoke there will be no MOT fail if one is fitted.
