hi,
ive got a 2000 defender with bad rough running, have had oil into ecu, i've changed the loom and cleaned the ecu and plugs but still runs bad, scanner says Topside switch preinjection fault, which i'm told means ECU has past away, i can get a good Disco2 td5 ECU from a mate.
But wot i need to know is, Will it be ok in a defender as its from a disco????
Thx in advance for any help :)
Paul.

Hi, had the same fault code on my disco and so it was... dead ECU. If u have an MSBxxxxxx ECU which is kaput(and i think u do cos it's MY 2000) the only chance is to replace it with a flashable NNN...... suitable ECU or send it to a ECU repair specialist, second hand MSBxxxxxx ECU's will be not "flashable".

See the codes, there are 2 ECM's suitable from one to another:

NNN000120 it will work on defender and discovery EU2 manuals
NNN500020 will work on the same EU3 with EGR cooler

4. The EU2 and EU3 types can be used one for another but u have to make sure that the ECU is programed with the correct fueling files as they are different from EU2 to EU3 cars, if the mapping is different the functionality may suffer and have some side effects, and if you use a non compliant ECU off a disco for a defender the engine might run but the fuel gauge will work backwards

newer ECU can be used instead of older ...here are all the part numbers f0r both types in chronological order(yours is MSB101171 i think)

DEFENDER

MSB101170 ELECTRIC CONTROL UNIT-FUEL CONTROL, 2.5L 5 CYL L/R TURBO DIESEL, TD5
MSB101171 ELECTRIC CONTROL UNIT-FUEL CONTROL, 2.5L 5 CYL L/R TURBO DIESEL, TD5
MSB101171 ELECTRIC CONTROL UNIT-FUEL CONTROL
MSB101360 ELECTRIC CONTROL UNIT-FUEL CONTROL, 2.5L 5 CYL L/R TURBO DIESEL, TD5
MSB000080 ELECTRIC CONTROL UNIT-FUEL CONTROL, 2.5L 5 CYL L/R TURBO DIESEL, TD5
NNN000120 ELECTRIC CONTROL UNIT-FUEL CONTROL, TD5
NNN500020 ELECTRIC CONTROL UNIT-FUEL CONTROL, BEFORE ORDERING PLEASE CHECK FOR SERVICE EXCHANGE VERSION, TD5
LR006328 ELECTRIC CONTROL UNIT-FUEL CONTROL, EXCHANGE PART (RE-MANUFACTURED), TD5

DISCOVERY

MSB101183 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, MANUAL TRANSMISSION
MSB101184 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, MANUAL TRANSMISSION
MSB101330 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, MANUAL TRANSMISSION
NNN000120 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, MANUAL TRANSMISSION
NNN500020 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, COOLED EGR, CHECK FOR SERVICE EXCHANGE VERSION, MANUAL TRANSMISSION
LR006328 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, EXCHANGE PART (RE-MANUFACTURED), COOLED EGR, MANUAL TRANSMISSION
NNN500250 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, NON COOLED EGR, MANUAL TRANSMISSION
MSB101192 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(+)"EUROPE/J"'
MSB101193 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(+)"EUROPE/J"'
MSB101340 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(+)"EUROPE/J"'
NNN000130_USE 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(+)"EUROPE/J"'
NNN500030 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(+)"EUROPE/J"'
LR006301 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, EXCHANGE PART (RE-MANUFACTURED), REAR, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(+)"EUROPE/J"'
MSB101260 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(-)"J"' OR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(-)"EUROPE"')
MSB101261 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(-)"J"' OR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(-)"EUROPE"')
MSB101350 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(-)"J"' OR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(-)"EUROPE"')
MSB000130 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(-)"J"' OR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(-)"EUROPE"')
MSB500030 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(-)"J"' OR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(-)"EUROPE"')

So u can see now which is suitable from one to another.

Hi all, have been looking through all the info on changing my ecu from the msb to the nnn type.
I still haven't really found a definitive answer.
Can I change my MSB101330 (51, td5 manual ) to a NNN000120 ?
I have just acquired a nanocom so I can swap settings and injector codes myself.
Reason for wanting to do this is so I can try different maps out on the car to see what suits it best. Thanks Ben

yes you can but the best option would be a NNN500250 as those which are common with defenders have a 'glitch' on the clutch switch input

Apparently the nnn000120 that I am looking at was removed from a discovery. And I can get it for about £150 do you think it would be worth it or hold out for the nnn500250. Thank you for your input, I was hoping you replied as you sound like you know what you are on about :)

Brill, do you know if there is much work involved in doing it?
I remember somewhere reading that the throttle pedal changed from or to a 3 wire. Will this need changing ?
Also is there a certain map that can be downloaded to simply apply and work :) or as it's eu2 in that list above will it be ok ? Thanks Ben

everything is about programming, the number of throttle tracks too, you dont have to chenge the pedal just the setting in the ECU, yours being MSB101330 it might have the 3 track throttle set from the beginning, read the settings from the MSB ECU including the injector codes, plug in the NNN ECU, first of all make it learn the immobiliser code, insert the injector codes, see if all the other settings are the same then load what fuel map you want in it...that's all

I thought that a defender 90 was set differently to the 110.
Is this just in the fuelling set up? I take it from what you are saying is you can't re-program the fulling unless you have a NNN.... ecm?

Not sure on the difference between 90 and 110 i would think that they are the same, The Msb ecu has to have the ROM(i think) chip removed and a new one with a new fuel map soldered in, where as the NNN ecu has a PROM (Programmable) Basically means that the fuelling map can be changed through the obd port :)

NNN was Primarily all facelift models.

almost exact;)... the 'chips' are all EEPROM(Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) just that the MSB ECUs don't have the rest of 'hardware'/circuitry as to be able to access the memory through the OBD port(like the NNNs have)... that's all

and as about the 90 and 110 defenders.... I think the difference is in length not in the fuel maps :D

Right, so i received my NNN000120 ecu today, but am a bit confused.
It has 3 stickers on it, One really worn paper one which i dont think has any thing to do with it.
A little one which Says NNW500900, and the cars vin.
Then the normal long one on the bottom, which says NNN000120.

So it this still a NNN000120 or is it a NNW500900 ? Thanks Ben

cant you upload a pic? ... that NNW500900 is also a LR. Discovery/Defender ECU part number from a subcategory and afaik it was some trouble with that series

anyway before getting stressed start sync'ing it and see how it goes...first of all in the EMS -Immobiliser menu to learn the security code and read(remember) the injector codes from the original ECU

I knew it was a land rover number as I have seen it on some other posts, but I wasn't sure it was a manual type disco one. Here is the pic :)

no worries, it's irrelevant what's on the cover as it might have been hurt or in a worst shape and replaced to be more marketable, that original sticker on the main casing is important, you can start working on it without fear

Well thats good news then.
The car is in bits at the moment so i dont even know if it runs with the original ecu :)
I just seen that ecu and new i wanted to change it so i brought it.

It shouldn't be to long until its up and running, i just need the ace and pas fluid first :)

But i can read injector codes as i dont need to have the engine running

Another quick question, if someone can help.
Once i have completed a live data test with nanocom and saved it.
What programme do i use to open the file on my computer ?
