EAS compressor P38

Well my refurb kit came as a missis out at hairdressers took compressor off and proceeded to strip down. Last time I did one it took about 30 mins, ah not this time. Came apart easy enough but but when I removed cylinder for piston notice no large O ring just loads of sealant. The small O ring was present but that too had loads of sealant round it and took ages to clean up.. Right lets take out the piston and change the seal as it was obviously very worn and like me old and knackered. For the love of god I couldn't get any allen key to fit to loosen grub screw on shaft . Shone torch in hole and looking through a magnifying glass I will swear blind there isn't one there. Just tried to pries piston off shaft but rock solid but won't budge. Checked hole again and sure there isn't a grub screw
Ah well could job I've got my old compressor thats had seals and O rings done but has a duff thermal switch. Swapped the end caps over with known good thermal switch to my old one and jobs a good un. Firstly I'm up and running with a compressor and secondly I can now take my time and have another go at sorting the bits I have into a runner
Nowt ever goes straight forward and simple does it

I'd bet the grub screw is there, very hard to see it though and on the last one I did very hard to undo.

Cheers Keith, I bought this compressor 5yrs ago as a refurb, but on stripping it down its been a bit of a bodge job by the looks of it. Any way have got a complete compressor to play with and will get it sorted

I've never taken the piston and con rod off John.i believe the grub screw is 3.5mm. Good luck.

When they went to Chinese compressors from American Thomas compressors that is when the grub screws became difficult to remove.
I think the Chinese tighten them with an air tool when doing them up and the threads on the grub screw are deeper on the Chinese ones also.

I am fine mate, looking after my mates son at the moment. He is still struggling with his passing away.
I do the best i can and have found him a job and hopefully someone to vent out on insead of his mother .
He is a great lad but , he has took his fathers passing badly i am afraid. He was a great friend and a great dad
Sorely missed.
Hope you are all well, do not have much time on here as off late as i am helping him restore his dads old C90 Honda he had tucked way in the back of the shed lol

I have quite a few brand new OEM - complete pistons for P38 if anyone ever needs them - cheap cheap innit, come with piston cover and i also have some brand new original oem P38 complete compressor heads with teflon pipes fitted , valves and seals all fitted ready to fit - cheap cheap innit

The grub screw should be imperial 1/8th

Its been a while now but his dad was my best mate for many many years least i can do. His wife is coping ok and trying to get on with things but the son has gone a little of the rails though not much. Nothing a headlock and a few kidney shots will not fix if the fatherly approach does not work lol.
I called him a retard the other day and he said that is unacceptable in this day and age, i said so is upsetting your mother. He reigned his neck in

How are you coping with the loss? I still remember your kindness when I had trouble rebuilding my valve block but I'm a stubborn bugger aren't I..

I am fine mate, just glad he did not suffer much. As for you stubborn is not the word i would use more determined

We're fine thanks,the care giver for the grieving usually gets forgotten I think of myself as determined to be stubborn.

My old one was dead easy this ones a pig. Have tried several different sizes and the seems to be nothing for them to bite on Either the grub is rounded or not there and piston has been glued onto shaft

Cheers kurt I can see lots of thread in the hole. Its just as though no grub screw in there

Should be there mate the problem is that they torque them up way too high.
Sometimes with a bit of heat they loosen a bit. Not too much heat though

Is it possible to drill them out

I tried and failed but that does not mean it cannot be done mate
Have you tried a smaller allen key head up the hole as it may be a smaller head sometimes. Worth a try.
Try metric and imperial as ting tongs will use whatever they have in stock

Give it a go can’t break what’s broken. I’ve possibly got a piston and crank assembly here somewhere if you need one John. It’s definitely here. Probably in MarJons box.
