Over the last week i have had the odd time that the access light on the christmas tree switch just flashes, instead of rising to normal height when asked to.
This has happened more often as the week has gone by, when today i had to give in and have a look inside the pump.
I replaced the EAS pump piston seal when i first got the car about 1500 miles ago as it vibrated a lot inside,and the one inside was in good condition but still i changed it as i was there.
The piston cylinder on the other hand was looking a bit tired though with a bit of scoring and the odd scratch,so i cleaned it up with a bit of 1500 grit wet and dry before putting it back together.
Anyway the pump has run fine til recently so when i pulled it apart tonight, i was suprised to see that although the seal still looks perfect it was as though it had shrunk between piston and cylinder wall.
In other words,there is so much blow by im surprised it could fill the tank at all !!
You know when you have just changed the piston seal and you have to gently drop the cylinder down over the seal/piston at a 45 degree angle,then carefully straighten it up as its a tight fit?
Well mine can now be just placed straight down over piston/seal and there is still a visable gap between seal and wall
I can only imagine that the piston cylinder, inner wall has accelerated wear for some reason !
Still i have now put it back together and bolted it back in place,but there is very little air pressure coming out of where the blue 13mm pipe bolts on now :doh:
With just light finger pressure on the hole, you can stop the air coming out now. About the same pressure as a fish tank pump can generate !
So i've decided to bite the bullet and buy a new EAS air pump rather than a recon jobby which may only last a short time.
I see Island 4x4 seem to be doing the best price i can find at approx 180 quid new, does anyone know of a better price elsewhere ?
As its the first fairly major problem in my first 5 months of ownership, i should be thankfull its nothing worse really i suppose
