ok folks,

been doing a lot of searching on the site and read every thread that there is about the P38 DSP amp.

it was mentioned that a Disco amp will fit but only works front speakers.

so, I went to lrparts.net.ru and hand a look around. it seems that the DSP from a Disco 2, may fit. pt num XQK000050 AMPLIFIER AUDIO POWER, HARMON KARDON, WITH SAT NAV, WITH 11 SPEAKERS

the part number fitted in mine is XQK100340 AMPLIFIER AUDIO POWER, '(+)"CDN/MEX/USA"', LESS KENSINGTON

now, my question is this, does it make any difference if i have 11 speakers or less?

or do i go with the quote from the main stealers of 369+vat for a new unit?

Dave

£369 could easily buy you a new headunit and you could rip out the DSP and fit your own amp.

been looking at that route too, after buying the amp, HU, cross-overs, wiring, and fitting, its cheaper to just keep it standard.

i just want some sounds! lol. it already had an aftermarket Sony HU fitted, but only worked on LHS. after fitting the original HU, lost everything.

tested all the power feeds tonight and it gets power, just nothing coming out. CD changer works, HU works, and the controls on the steering wheel work. but naff all on sound. :)

and the price from the dealer is MUCH cheaper than going to a reccommended supplier :) some are asking £700+!!!!!

hmmm.

im thinking of the L322 which is easier to change the amp as all the individual speakers wire back to the one amp as apposed to the P38 which has multiple amps !

what links the amps together ? fiber optics ?

no, just normal wiring. the problem is that you only have 4 wires coming from the HU to the DSP. then it splits the signals to each of the speakers and sub. on the later high line, you have out stations in each door but not individual amps. the DSP is the only amp that drives everything.

so it could be like the L322 in one way. but as i have 3 speakers in each front door, 1 in each of the rear, and 2 in the sub, theres a lot of things to connect :)

Mine is similar yes, just the crossovers are built into the amp and not into the doors.

3 in each front doors
2 in each rear doors
1 in center of dash
2 in the sub

I have fitted an aftermarket system to mine allready
Including an aftermarket sub woofer amp and touchscreen head unit

And when / if my original amp breaks I will fit an aftermarket

Don't they do aftermarket amps with the crossover connections built into the amp ? Or can't you use your existing ones with an aftermarket amp ?

you could if you can get the ratings correct. they dont do 1 that is exactly the same.

Clarkey has been a godsend on this with me. he has looked into changing things in detail. but not having a donor vehicle to try, its difficult.

"""Hi Dave, sounds like the amp side of the DSP amp may have packed up if there is no sound at all coming out of it. You need to try other sources, such as the radio, to confirm that. It it HAS packed in, it's either expensive to replace (2nd hand amps can go for up to £300 on ebay or from breakers!) or a pain in the arse to re-wire to accept a standard amp. It is possible just to bridge connections at the DSP plug to run the speakers direct from a HU, as long as you run them in series so as not to overload the HU amp - but it wont sound very good (this is just a theoretical possibility, I dont actually know of anyone who's tried it yet!!)

If you want to replace the HU with an aftermarket one, you couls also replace the DSP amp with an aftermarket, but again you'll need to be careful how you wire up the speakers and you will lose the freq seperation between the drivers, making the system sound crap - unless you also splash out on some crossovers, which will be expensive!

Paul"""

and Paul Also did a thread about the size of resistor and things that are close to be needed to get the speakers working close.

only thing i can think of, when i get the money of course, is do a complete new install and have new speakers with amps to each 1 and have it custom installed. but thats gonna be mega bucks to sort out :D:D:D

hence going for new or used DSP to get by for now.

I have a disco 2 with HK sytem , and also p38 with the HK system , I might try and see if
the parts interchange , but as you already know my p38 has its own problems with the sound system aswell lol
