Hello All,

I've searched, but the only thread I found suggested the engine continued to run not just the pump.

My brother has just bought a DSE!

Anyhoo, whilst nosing around it, he's noticed the fuel pump continues to run even with the key out. It flattened the battery last night so this evening we took out F29 and it stopped.

Power to the fuel pump seems to be fed by a few things, (glow plugs, cranking, ignition pos II) is there anywhere we should start looking first?

Any help gratefully received.

Saint,

You're right. I meant Fuse 39.

It's 1996.

I wondered about a stuck relay. Do they melt shut (or open) or do they just get a bit tired after a while and need changing out?

They tend to get 'welded' in the 'on' position, and the return spring gets weak over time, they can be considered consumable items.....

Thanks Saint.

Just to check, is this consistent with the engine stopping when I shut it off but the fuel pump not stopping. I've not had much experience of diesels bit I'd have thought a diesel would just keep going if the pump is?

Cheers,

J

There is two pumps on the Diesel - an in tank lift pump and the fuel injection pump.

The Lift pump does just that - primes the fuel system and ensures a good pressure is fed to the Fuel Injection Pump.

The Injection pump is timed to provide fuel to the required injector at the right time.

When you switch the engine off, the fuel shutoff solenoid cuts the fuel to the injection pump....if the relay is knackered for the lift pump this could continue to run on shut down.....

Not sure if it is fed from the switch ignition line or from a permenant 12v from the battery....but if it is indeed continuing with the key out, I can only assume it is rom a permenant positive.
