Droning noise! (and voices in my head!)

Hi gang,

About two weeks ago a drone started toward the rear (and i think drivers side) of the hippo.. Im starting to worry now, because its not completely constant noise wise - i hope its a wheel bearing, but the last time a bearing went in a car of mine, it was a constant drone that increased in noise with speed - this drone doesnt seem to increase with speed

I dont know much about 4wd systems at all, but im worried it may be my rear diff? About 4 weeks ago i got stuck in a muddy field.. Had to rock back and fore to get out.. got out no problem, but since then ive had chronic wheel wobble thru the steering wheel.. at 1st i thought id just lost a wheel balancing weight when wheel spinning, but now, combined with this droning noise im worried ive ****ed something up..

Also, and i dont know if this is in my head, but there seems to be more resitsance when im accelerating?? I dunno if ive gone bloody loopy, but i swear when im doing over 50, i have to press the throttle harder to make it maintain speed??

My VCU has only done 30k, and also had new bearings when it was changed.. and when i reverse on full lock out of my drive, it feels like the same amount of resistance that ive always had, so i dont think its that.. But I cant to do the one wheel up test as i dont have a long bar to hold the weight..

Can one of you guys through some ideas of what could be wrong my way?? Or have i just totally lost the plot and just over reacting to a wheel bearing?

The noise stays even if i coast in neutral at speed too.

Thanks peeps.

have you give the underside a good jet wash?
There might be mud or stones stuck on/in something causing an imbalance.

wulf,

no havent checked the caliper guide pins.. wouldnt be sure how to either

freelaner,

Yes-give it a hell of a jetwash after i got out of the field, and two or three since.. absolutely blasted all the mud and stuff off underneath..

Do you think mud could possibly cause an imbalance on the propshaft or something?

It were a suggestion put forward on a thread a while back, apparently mud could get inside the prop and cause a wobble.

Edit: as for the caliper guides

Take off wheel undo top and bottom caliper bolts hang caliper up out of the way with string or
summat to spring and inspect free movement on guides. These allow the caliper to move freely to give equal pressure on front and back pads.

could be i suppose..

Funny you should say that, cos i am actually planning to take the prop off sometime durng the next 2 weeks.. I think its beyond my skills tho, considering my lack of garage and narrow drive with chippings..

A friend of a friend of mine is gonna do it in his garage for free, but it wont be until both of our shift patterns in work cross and we're off at the same time..

I guess if the boise goes after the props removed its a prop/diff problem, and if it stays it could inly be the wheel bearing????? Possibly?????

Hiya Singvogel,

Yes, saw your thread.. I think unless someone else on here has any other suggestions, ill just have to take the prop off as planned, and see if the noise goes.. To be honest, im starting to sweat a bit.. a few peeps on here saying IRD or VCU failiure etc.. I dont need that kind of hassle at the moment - But the noise is definitely coming from the rear and toward the drivers side..

If it is IRD or VCU failiure, ill be well cheesed off. I ALWAYS have 4 matching tyres put on her (at great expense) ALWAYS change all 4, have a VCU thats only on 30 thousand miles, and the hippo wants for nothing service wise.. So if its failed when its with someone who takes as good care of it as me, ill be well ****ed off..

A workmate has a 52 plate Td4 ES on 110k, hes had if form new, gave up servicing it regularly, changes the front tyres without changing the backs (because he thinks the VCU advice of us all on here is a load of bollocks!) and insists he wont shell out for a new VCU despite the fact it should be changed at 90k!!!

He hardly ever services it, and in all the 10 years he owned it, all thats ever gone wrong is the fuel pump!!! He flogs the guts out of it, tows a caravan all over britain and its never failed him!!!

How unfair is that!!!!!!

Maybe we should all run em into the ground and stop trying to fix em?

I don't think so wi my luck, i must've had a sh*t on a fairy, it'd self destruct in a week!

Just thought id ask, but do any of you guys think the wheel wobble through the steering wheel is connected to this droning noise, or is it just coincedence? Ill go to a garage Tuesday and ask them to balance all my wheels just for the hell of it, then we'll see if the wheel wobble goes... I guess if it stays its something else....

hi even if you have the prop of the dif will still be turning as it is conected to the wheels it could be like frelaner said somthing stuck but look inbetween the vcu cuplings a smal stone may be trapped prop of is easy as me and my son-inlaw know first on ramps and jack up back then axel stands to be safe then undo front you will need special hex socket and I think 17 mm spaner with draw the 6 bolts and the front and the quarter circle spacers (1 to 2 Studs) then the 4 bolts at the back and then the four studs holding up the vcu you either need the jack under or somebody holding it as it is quite heavy and it is all off hope this helps

I would go the wheel bearing route - cheap enough to eliminate if you go to an independent garage.

Wobble - I have one - get an injector leak back test done - a miss here will cause the engine to transmit a wobble throughout the car. Is the steering wheel wobbling?

newcyboots...please don't go looking for caliper guide pins on the rear brakes....you've got drum brakes like the rest of us except for irishwulf of course....
As usual I read the first post wrong .I thought he had typed drivers side front . The symptoms sound like a brake problem , maybe that cam thingy in the drum is stuck , and while he's at it he could check the guide pins .
