Hi Guys,

Girlfriend bought herself a td5 disco recently... Powersteering pump needed replacing, I had a what i though was a decent one to swap it with.

Put it on... Belt back on etc etc and as she started it up something didn't sound right... Then as I said turn it off the belt came off and then the landy turned off...

I'm guessing there was movement without the belt being on... What do I do next regarding timing etc?

If the engine likely to be knackered?

You broke it You bought it is the rule I think.
I hope she is the forgiving sort.
Someone with lots of td5 experience will be along shortly.:D

The wheel attachment on the power steering pump snapped. I fitted it saturday and I'm 100% certain I tightened them back up.. I did venture to the pub afterwards so maybe I rushed it and didn't or I over tightened.. how knows .

Mate of mines a mechanic and he said just fit a new belt... Try it and if it's knocking or shaking loads then it's head off and see how long I'm in the dog house

Best of luck buddy! ;)

Luckily cam is chain driven

Get in!!!! This is the first td5 I've had. I go as far as a 300tdi and thats it and there's not been many of those... Usually 2.25s in series etc.

That's ideal then. Thanks for sharing the info appreciate it

You've snapped the aux drive belt, not the timing belt (the td5 have a timing chain).

Fix whatever went wrong fit new belt and I'm sure the engine will be fine.

As others have said the aux belt has nothing to do with valve timing. The 3 bolts that hold the pulley to the pump should be torqued up to 7 lb.ft or 10 nm . I've never heard of a pulley breaking if fitted correctly, did the bolts work loose or snap off/was the power steering pump meshed with the water pump ok ? If it's just a case of broken pulley, bolts & belt it should be an easy fix & going down the pub AFTERWARDS is never frowned upon :):):).

Yea it's the part of the pump that the bolts thread into that snapped. Was an old pump I found in the shed so may have been thrown around for years... who knows haha

Fitted another pump now, didn't have enough time to test as headed off to the LRO Show in Peterborough.
