If you do not touch the adjustment, it will go back OK.
So I should be able to use old adjustment as a guide for fitting new one
You are just changing the swivels, you do not touch the adjustment from memory.
That's what it failed on is the rubbers
If they are available, the bottom lip of the rubbers fits to the inside of the ball joint not to a lip on the outside.IMMIC.
The swivels come out easily enough with the right tool, not expensive.

Will the adjustment be the same on the new ball joints or will they need to be set
If the new ball joints are fully home the should be no need to touch the adjustment, at least that is what I and others have found.
So the adjustment is not on the ball joint just on the hub
The ball joints just press into holes in the yoke. have you looked at RAVE?
What end float,shaft slips into the diff and the other end fits into the hub and is held in place with a big nut.I dont remember any end float adjustment. '
If I remember there is a tapered collar that is turned to adjust the height of the yoke do the drive shaft is level where it passes through the oil seal.If the collar isn't disturbed then it should be OK.
