Hi all, the drain plug in the fly wheel housing on my 110 is stuck have tried nocking on a smaller socket on but it won't budge , it was left in by the previous owner and when I did the rebuild I thought it would be easier to get out when the engine was installed as we have a pit but I was wrong. Has anyone used them bolt removal sockets ? If so are they any good ? Or has anyone any other ideas ? have thought about welding a bolt on to the plug but am worried about damaging the housing any ideas much appreciated .

irwin type socket or welding a nut on would help,but so might giving it a few good whacks with a hammer remembering to keep knocking the socket on before it mushrooms too much, enough whacks it will undo by hand
 
cheers James have tried knocking a socket on and hitting with a hammer but won't budge, I think someone has tried before me as it looks quite rounded off will order some Irwin sockets and see if they work . Are Irwin the best make ?

The Irwin Bolt Removers are the best tool I have purchased since owning my landrover, a must for every tool box in my opinion.

Cheers all, great minds think alike gstuart those were the ones I ordered :D , they should be here tomorrow or wedsnesday so will let you know how I get on with them . If they don't work will try some heat .

irwin are good but i suspect you havent hit it anywhere near enough, i remove such bolts daily
 
Believe me I've removed some stubborn bolts in my time used to be a fitter fabricator in a foundry and foundry waste recycling mill, but think I've misunderstood you there . Do you mean actually whack the wading plug with the hammer ? As I didn't think it was wise to do that incase I damaged the flywheel casing as its cast ali , found that out with the timing case when I rebuilt the engine trying to remove the water pump bolts caught the case and buggered it.

yes the plug ,the flywheel housing is a lot stronger than a timing case for obvious reasons,
 
If the Irwin won't do it another option is to drill through (carefully) it and use the largest extractor you can get in there although you may need to grind off the tip of the extractor so it doesn't foul on the flywheel. Failing that you could potentially try threading the remnants of the hole to fit a bolt if you need to go wading?

Or after tapping,screw a hose fitting into it connect a hose routed somewhere high and pretend you meant to do it all along and it's not a bodge at all honest ;)

glad u resolved the issue

i've been very happy with the irwin sockets , got me out of trouble when i was replacing an airtank
