Evenin'.

Can anyone advice the best route to do a DIY paintjob?

I have a compressor and spray gun but never used it.

Could i get away with using aerosols?

The finish doesnt have to be perfect, car is a toy and i think was previously painted using a brush!

So yeah any tips on doing a DIY paint job would be appreciated.

Also i like the G4 orange, but i think its a bit dark, anyone recommend a colour slightly lighter but not camel light?

if you have a compressor and gun use that rather than air-arse-holes its a good time to learn how to do it, i would suggest going to a local bodyshop and asking them to mix your paint for you as its a bit of an art and if you get it wrong it will bugger the paint
 
Im gonna ask a really dumb question now.

Im sure, its sand, prime, paint, clear coat. But what typres of paint do i need to be using?

I assume primer is primer? Then do i want cellulose paint or what? Will see what google brings up, but if anyone can advise that would be good too.`

i am in middle of a similar job at the moment,preperation is 99% of the job, any bare areas need to be prepped with an etch primer,i have used nuspeed cellulose paint which is quite easy to apply but the pros are now using acrylic paints as better for the enviroment,

So sand back best i can till its clean, remove with some paint prep wipes. Apply 3 layers of etch primer. Anything special about this etch primer? Pour it into the hopper then on it goes?

then wait. Do i need to fine sand the primer before applying the paint.

If i go for cellulose, do i need to do anything? Stir the can, pour it in the hopper off i go? Do i need to add thinners or anything?

Any prep required for the paint coats before the laquer?

Any particular method to clean the hopper/paint gun after each use?

upoxy acid etch is a first class etch primer and easy to use. its one part primer, one part acid, dead easy to mix 50/50. one light coat then one cover coat of etch.
go to and auto paint supplier and get yourself some SCOTCH BRIT, this is like a green pan scourer. go over the primer with this but dont cut through the primer.
you cant get cellulose paint now its water based or acrylic, some suppliers will still supply celly if not tell them its for a boat, its still legal to sell celly paint for marine applications.
if you are going to laquer then you will need to use a water based base coat or a solvent 2K base coat.
give the base coat about 20 mins to flash off then over coat with the laquer but dont leave the base to dry over night then laquer it. after some time the laquer will flake off and the panels will look scabby due to the laquer not bonding with the base coat.
once the base coat is on you dont do anything to this regarding sanding or rubbing down. when the laquer has hardend off you can give this a wet and dry sanding down 1500 grit or higher just to take out any blemishes or imperfections. once this is done machine polish the laquer to get your shine.
make sure your guns are very clean between each different paints/laquer.

the paint supplier will be able to tell you what ratio mix you should be using :)

I second the roller idea, just done mine. Soooo much easier than spraying and only cost about 60 quid so it didnt exactly break the bank. Looks good too!
 
once youve got the hang of using the spray gun you will wonder why you ever used rollers/brushes ! its real easy to do to get good results, its the prep work that is harder to do cos its time consuming and tedius !

hes the boot floor of a discovery im repairing, i etch primed and primer coated it tonight. its about to get its colour coat and lacquer coat tomorrow if the weather is good :)

Yeah might give the roller route a try see how it goes. if its too crap then spray. Id imagine the paint is gonna be wrecked after a couple of outings anyway so dont wanna spend too much time on it.

Got any pics of your post roller paint job anyone?

Il try and find some pics later. I used that american $50 challenge as a guide line on what to do, the main thing to remember though is that preperation is 90% of the work, the actual painting is the easy bit!
 
Whats the best roller paint then or just any metal paint.

Cant seem to find tangiers orange doh. Generic bright orange it is then!
 
i painted mine bright orange too, i used this stuff called "rustoleum", i only used it cos it self levels meaning you dont get any lines and you dont ave to use a primer, meaning less time paintin. Its a yankie invention so you can only get it from a few places in the UK, i got it from lawson-his in southampton. Very friendly people and they deliver next day.
